Bug Description

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

I'm using Karmic beta.

During boot and also when logged in, also before starting any application, I have cracking sound coming out of my speakers every some seconds.
More strange, if I switch off the speakers then I can hear the same cracks from the internal speakers (it's an HP laptop) even if the jack is plugged in. Seems like something electrical, but must be caused by some software problem as the problem is not present on Windows neither it was on Jaunty (though I switched off Pulseaudio, IIRC).

I forgot, the problem disappears when I run Rhythmbox (even when paused) or even when I open the audio preferences and just let it sit there without doing anything.

I put on Youtube a video to show what happens: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_W8HrRwep4
The subwoofer explains very well what I mean for cracks :D

Im having similar noises, i think it happens when an app tries to connect with pulseaudio, once it's connected there aren't more cracks.

Examples:

- when I scroll over the volume control makes a crack, but if I keep doing it doesn't
- when rythmbox starts
- when a youtube video starts
- every time empathy emits a sound

Once I had that symptoms too, but now the noises are coming out also when to desktop is idle, or doing nothing particular (like now, when writing this with Firefox without anything sound-related going on - neither Flash plugin).

Please fix this, it's very annoying.

Hi,

Edit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf as sudo, e.g. sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and change the setting:

options snd-hda-intel power_save=10

to

options snd-hda-intel power_save=0

reboot and see if this solves the problem.

Changed in pulseaudio (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Low
status: New → Incomplete

Great! So far problem seems fixed with that trick.
There's only one crack left at boot-time but I guess it happens when the soundcard is powered (and IIRC it happened also on previous releases).

Thank you very much.
