Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

Ubuntu UNR 9.10, Nautilus 2.28.1
I am running UNR 9.10 on a Dell Mini10V with a 1024x576 display. But the Nautilus'Edit'Preferences dialog is too big for this display, so that the buttons at the bottom are not visible. It is too big even when I hide the Gnome Panel, which allows about 24 extra pixels at the top, and would be too big even if the screen were 600 pixels high rather than just 576.

Medium priority. Workaround is to use <shift><tab> until the focus wraps to the bottom of the dialog where it presumably rests on something called Accept or Enter (I don't know because I can't see).

Fix by simply rearranging the dialog a bit (such as put the "use compact layout" and "text beside icons" options side-by-side instead of on top of one another, thus saving about 30 pixels of height).

Very irritating bug that affects me too. Its really irritating because the OK/Cancel options are outside the viewable area.

I can confirm this bug and am marking it as Triaged. I'll forward it upstream if it hasn't already been reported at GNOME's Bugzilla.

I think a good GUI should be able to adjust itself to the current window and screen size. It would be nice to see this one fixed. It is a very important dialog and shouldn't be hard to fix.

Suggested fix: Show a scroll bar is the entire dialog cannot fit.

Workaround: Hold down Alt and pull the window up.

Another suggested fix:

Automatically reduce gnome's default font-sizes on smaller displays.
For example, using 8pt fonts (changed in the control centre from the default 12pt) for application font, desktop font, window title font, fixed width font makes this dialog (and other oversize ones too) fit completely on an 800x600 display.
For me this seems a cleaner solution than adding a scrollbar to the dialog or sliding the window up while holding down Alt.

By the way, I searched for nautilus preferences related bugs on Launchpad's Mint section but for some reason it didn't bring up this bug report, so I made a new bug report https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/567331 and was then told it was a duplicate of this one.
