Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

On fresh installs of Ubuntu (those without Compiz settings yet), among the first things I change are Compiz's speed settings. I adjust the speed (and timesteps if available) of features like desktop wall, expo, and scale to make them faster. I'm fine with the speed of minimize and maximize, though.

With these settings, they made the desktop experience snappier for me and people tell me that they find my system fast.

If please change if this isn't the right package for that.

I personally just found out that the "animation time step" under Effect Settings under my default Ubuntu installation was set to 10. I moved it down to 1, and that makes the animations appear much smoother. I think all default installations should have this setting.

While it looks better at 1 it also uses a lot more resources so if your computer is under heavy load or you just have an older machine it while stutter and look horrible.

Well yes if a user has an older computer the animations will stutter, but should this user have the effects enabled in the first place? I just think that, if a user is going to go ahead and enable desktop effects, the effects might as well be decent looking (including a time step of 1) rather than forcing the effects to look jerky by having a higher time step. This is basically bringing down all users who have decent computers to the level of those who shouldn't even be enabling these effects.

Regarding computer load, I'd rather have jerkiness during heavy processing (which is quite rare) and smoothness for the grand majority of the time, versus just having average effects all the time.

You should really consider lowering the opening/close animations to 200 and minimize to 300. The animations are so quick at this point they seem to stutter. I have a decent graphics card and have been running Compiz some time. These settings are quite nice. This gives a nice transitioning open/close effect similar to the iPhone and Palm Pre. Overly quick does not necessarily always look and feel better.
