Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-openchrome

I installed the Xubuntu Lucid alpha-1 on this Averatec 3280, then was able to update it with apt-get up through today. With the kernel shown below, the login screen appears shifted over 1/2 the screen width, so the X-axis origin is in the middle of the screen. On first booting, a popup appears saying "Xfce power manager" and "HAL daemon is not running". When I click on the Close button, I can log in (The login screen appears at the side of the screen, wrapping around from the right side to the left side of the screen.

Once I log in, the normal Xfce screen does not appear (it did when I first installed, before updating, but with 1600x1200 resolution, which does not work on this 1024x768 panel). Instead, a small text window appears on the upper-left of the logical screen (in this case, it's located to the right of the center of the screen).

This is somewhat similar to bug #495553 running ubuntu lucid alpha-1 on the same system, but the final effect on the display is different. Here I can't get a regular xfce display to appear, whereas under gnome ubuntu I could, but with the screen offset. Also the initial popup regarding the HAL daemon does not appear for the Gnome version of ubuntu.

As with bug #495553, when I try to switch to a tty with ctl-alt-F1 through F6, I get a black screen, but can switch back with alt-F7 normally.

I'm attaching an apport bug report file from this system.

The behavior is different with an earlier kernel - I'll append information about that later.

Running the 2.6.32-7-generic #10-Ubuntu SMP kernel instead, the symptoms are the same except that the screen is NOT offset . The tiny text window appears on the actual upper-left of the screen, with the rest of the screen filled with the normal Xfce blue screen background image.

Again, trying to switch to a tty with ctrl-alt-F1 through F6 results in a useless screen, with a multicolored background; switching back to the X display works with alt-F7.

Hi Peter.

Please use new mode switch by adding to your xorg.conf file following lines:
   Option "modeSwitch" "new"

Is it works for you?

Try also apply this patch.

Ensure that video playing is working.

Hi Bartosz -

The xorg.conf I'm using for both Ubuntu (Gnome) and Xubuntu has

Section "Device"
        Driver "openchrome"
        VendorName "VIA Tech"
        BoardName "openchrome"
        Identifier "Configured Video Device"
        Option "SWCursor" "true"
        Option "modeSwitch" "new"
        Option "PanelSize" "1024x768"
        #Option "PanelID" "0" #640x480, Single, Dithering
        # Option "EnableAGPDMA" "Off"
        # Option "NoAccel" "true"
EndSection

But I haven't made the patch yet.

Right now I have Ubuntu installed in my test partition; should I try
the patch also under Gnome?

Thanks, Peter

It's completely normal that you lose data on "Windows" platforms.
That's why you have a UNIX or Linux or BSD server for backups.

I tried building the driver with the patch on the Gnome version of

binary driver and continue on ... I won't have time to try xubuntu
until after the weekend.

Hello.
So the option:
Option "modeSwitch" "new"
nothing helps?

Is your computer have blank screen with this option?

Attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.
If you can from after screen blank (or /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old after reboot).

Here are the Xorg.n.* log files from yesterday (I booted into Jaunty on the laptop and mounted the partition with /var/log/ on it to get these logs). And from xorg.conf, I have

        VendorName "VIA Tech"

        Identifier "Configured Video Device"
        Option "SWCursor" "true"

        # Option "EnableAGPDMA" "Off"
        # Option "NoAccel" "true"
EndSection

I do get a blank screen after booting into xubuntu with the patch in place.

Checking the patch in the driver sources, I have this diff file (difference between patched and old unpatched via_driver.c file):

# diff via_driver*.c

Actually, the test above in #7 was done with ubuntu gnome, not xubuntu installed.

Also, I just rebuilt the driver with the patch removed (I was able to ssh in and do the rebuild of the driver), and ubuntu boots with the slit screen described in bug #495553, but it does run well otherwise.

After re-installing xubuntu and updating it, I can try the patch again, or possibly an updated patch. Possibly I'll wait until the alpha-2 ISO appears on this coming Thursday.

I have not tried Xubuntu since my last comment here. I'll try that
when alpha-3 comes out.
