Bug Description

Binary package hint: samba

I've had a patch here to make samba use upstart instead of init scripts for over a month, but uploading it was blocked on a pair of bugs (one in ifupdown, one in upstart) before the nmbd job's start condition could be satisfied properly. Those bugs are fixed, but now we're past FF, so I'm requesting an exception for this change.

I've been testing this change locally for a while and think it's safe, but the benefits are also small - it's mostly just cleanup and should have no user-visible benefits. (The upstart approach will be slightly more efficient at boot time, but probably not much unless someone has a LOT of network interfaces.)

This bug was fixed in the package samba - 2:3.4.5~dfsg-2ubuntu2

---------------
samba (2:3.4.5~dfsg-2ubuntu2) lucid; urgency=low

  * Switch smbd and nmbd over to upstart jobs, to ensure nmbd starts reliably
after the network is up. LP: #523868.
  * Remove /etc/network/if-up.d/samba on upgrade, superseded by the above.

would have been nice to see this backported to karmic

i have several machines that hang at boot due to nmbd and smbd pid file missing issues ... i have to "ctrl-alt-delete" and restart and repeat this loop until the machine finally boots in

i was at first just seeing it with nmbd ... so i did "disable netbios = yes" ... but then saw it with smbd pid file missing

i have a static ip set up in on my 1 network card

This change has nothing to do with PID files.
