Han you tell me what the tag means? I thought the attachment from uname -a
would show what Kernel is running - does the bugrep need more info?

Installing usb-modeswitch made my modem show up as Bus 002 Device 004: ID 12d1:1001 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E620 USB Modem and my mobile BB connection just works now as before.

IMHO (as usb-modeswitch was not installed in Karmic), it should be included in upgrade to Lucid.

Try "sudo modprobe option", it worked for me. The module somehow does not load automatically, so you have to load it manually.

Could someone confirm whether a username and/or password is required for UK Vodafone? Or, please advise on how to debug (have checked log files and lsusb, and the modem IS detected).

Yes the modem is detected for me too. But the driver doesnt load even if it is detected. I have exactly the same dmesg as the bug reporter.

My settings have the "phone number" set to *99# and the APN set to 3internet. With it set to autoconnect, all I have to do is plug my BB dongle in and the connection is made.

From a simple google I have found Vodafone UK settings may be as follows:
    * APN: internet (or pp.vodafone.co.uk if you're using prepay)
    * Username: web
    * Password: web
    * Session type: Continuous / permanent
    * Authentication: Normal
    * Security: Off

The 3g modem now works after setting up the modem in 'edit connections', although I also had to disable CHAP in configure settings under ppp settings. That may help someone else getting theirs going - mine wouldn't work with CHAP selected.

works as well.

I get the behaviour so:

Sometimes it works, sometimes not.
funny thing is, for me, it works first every time on a new install, or on the live CD.
As soon as you have installed, done the first connection setup, reboot.
Then there are problems.
Usually you get the USB modem popping up as a drive, shown as an icon on the desktop,
but then rarely does it show up as a network option.
very frustrating.

Confirmed regression.
My usb G3 modem Huawei E169 was working fine in 9.10 ubuntu, but after upgrade to Lucid it stoped working,
I can not re-create the G3 modem option in network-manager applet -> options -> new connection -> G3 Modem -> Add, it shows empty list of devices to choose from.

Huge regression for users in situation like this.

supposed fix: sudo aptitude install usb-modeswitch usb-modeswitch-data
does not help me.

confirm fix with on lucid
$ sudo aptitude install usb-modeswitch usb-modeswitch-data

but on karmic, works perfect without usb-modeswitch

It's enough to install:
$ sudo aptitude install usb-modeswitch
The *-data packages are usually dependencies, they shouldn't be installed manually.

It was no good in Karmic, and it is worse in Lucid.
The fix:
sudo aptitude install usb-modeswitch usb-modeswitch-data

doesn't help at all.

I have resorted to buying a 3G Router ..... cost me $180 (still better than the alternatives)

How can I download usb-modeswitch and usb-modeswitch-data, put then on a usb stick, take them to a pc withount internet connectivity and install them? I'm trying to get a Vodafone mobile modem working.

Download the .deb files, and install them using sudo dpkg -i filename.deb

I have the same issue with 10.04 amd64 ubuntu
I found on the internet this solution and it now works. But the correct solution should be integrated into ubuntu via ubuntu support.
so this problem is taken care of once and for all.

what we are doing is telling udev that when this device is pluggin in to switch its mode, paste this and save.

Mekan, I original used this solution before using usb-modeswitch, however it had the side effect of not loading any USB storage devices. usb-modeswitch works, but since using it, the connection is unstable on an e1550, requiring reconnects and replugging in the device.

Here the same with Huawei E160 and kernel 2.6.32-25-generic

Just tested on a new netbook PC with a Huawei - Natty works out of the box; Lucid still needs usb-modeswitch installed manually...

On ubuntu netbook remix 10.04.03 with sudo apt-get install usb-modeswitch i got mine Huawei 353 also working.

Maybe ton next Ubuntupackage this usb-modewitch needs to be included since its important to have all drivers installed allready and this take 606kb

Simon, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.
