This bug was fixed in the package ca-certificates-java - 20100406ubuntu1

---------------
ca-certificates-java (20100406ubuntu1) lucid; urgency=low

  * Make the installation and import of certificates more robust,

  * Print name of JVM in case of errors.
  * Set priority to optional, set section to java. Closes: #566855.

Why?

tf8 had the answer for me. I re-started in recovery mode to reduce my memory usage, re-installed ca-certificates-java, and it installed with no problem.

My system only has 256Mb RAM and I run into exactly this problem. Does it mean I cannot install open-jdk on my system?

I too have actually HW with less than 256Mb ram. And I pretty annoyed at openJDK, i coudlnt find HW requirements ANYWHERE on their site. (maybe im blind)

So, I had a nightmare with this.
In the end, i just edited the the error flag in /var/lib/dpkg/info/ca-certificates-java.postinst so that it diddnt error. This diddnt make it work, but it did allow me to remove the ca-certificates-java package and the entire openJDK and then installed the Sun one, as per here: "https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/ReleaseNotes#Sun Java moved to the Partner repository".

Tho, i had to edit: sudo vi /etc/apt/sources.list becuase there was no
tho, i had to first install python-software-properties to get add-apt-repository

THEN, however, i hit the wall that my cpu doesn't support cmov! (Ubuntu 10.04)

fixed that too. Installed Java 7.
I know that my workaround introduced a different bug for my specific HW, but here is the solution to that too. Incase some else out there is also going crazy:
http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=7032388

Note: current java7 has to be installed manually from:
http://download.java.net/jdk7/
I used these instructions to make it active:
