22-Aug-06 xorg update killed X on my Latitude D810

Bug Description

It was fine until a reboot (which was done for other reasons).

Now I get a "Failed to start the X server... ..Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem?" message which gets written over by a login prompt before I can use it.

The shell is working fine.
My video card is an ATI Radeon Mobile.

/var/log/Xorg.0.log has a modification time coincident with my fatal reboot and has these as its last four lines:

(II) ATI Candidate "Device" section "ATI Technologies, [...]"
(EE) No devices detected.
Fatal server error:
no screens found

Hi Daniel,

Does your simple addition of the link mean that I'm to run
update/upgrade and I'll be well?

I don't get an eth1 / DHCP connection when it boots to the shell.

I don't know if this is the bug (all PCI devices down?), or if I need
better ifconfig-type chops to get online and get (un)patched.

Any advice? Is it OK / appropriate for me to ask you?
