Bug Description
Binary package hint: xserver-xorg
Whenever I attempt to switch away to a virtual terminal ( e.g. Ctrl-Alt-F1 ) and then back to X ( Ctrl-Alt-F7 ), my system hangs displaying a slightly garbled version of whatever X was previously displaying. When this occurs, the machine doesn't respond to any keyboard input ( for switching back to a vt, or restarting the machine ), and doesn't respond to ping or ssh.
This behaviour also occurs when resuming from suspend or hibernate.
My setup is as follows:
- Dapper
- ATI Technologies Inc
R430 [Radeon X800 XL] (PCIe)
I have observed this behaviour using two kernels:
- 2.6.15-26-386
- 2.6.15-26-686
I have also reproduced this behaviour using both the 'ati' driver and the 'fglrx' driver.
There are several bugs listed that seem similar, but none seem to be as readily reproducible under these circumstances or situations.
Please let me know what I can do to provide more info. My apologies if this is miscategorized.
After a couple of tries with reinstalls from scratch ( didn't have any work on this machine, so I had nothing to lose ), I decided to try using the framebuffer option while reconfiguring X. This *seems* to have cleared up the problem, though I'm not 100% sure that I have the exact same setup as before, nor am I sure that this solution is adequate.
Will someone please assign this bug to an appropriate category?
