I get exactly the same error message on start up. Then once the desktop is fully loaded I click on mail applet icon again and it works fine

I'm wondering if its because I removed the password from my gnome-keyring?

This also affects me, restarting the applet by clicking it doesn't help. The only way around is to remove the applet and activate it again.
