Thank you for your concern. Is the migration assistant tied to ubuntu-desktop? If not, the desktop package is a meta-package, to insure the additional packages are installed. You should be able to safely remove one and install the other without affecting any packages.

Well, I don' really know if the installation assistant needs ubuntu-desktop when xubuntu-desktop is installed. Maybe we should ask someone from Ubiquity ?

For information, installing kubuntu-desktop or lubuntu-desktop does not uninstall ubuntu-desktop. That's also why I thought there may be a problem with xubuntu-desktop.

If more than one desktop meta-package is installed when attempting to upgrade using 'updte-manager', the upgrade will fail. Since the meta-package is not necessary after installing, this prevents the upgrade failing by insuring only ubuntu-desktop or xubuntu-desktop is installed.

I currently have ubuntu-desktop AND kubuntu-desktop AND lubuntu-desktop at the same time. There is a problem with them ?

There will be no problem with them until you decide to upgrade to a new release version. At that time, you will either be able to upgrade easily, or receive an error message that the upgrade failed due to the multiple -desktop packages installed.

Mmmh, I can't see why it wouldn't work. What's the exact error message displayed when you try to install xubuntu-desktop? I'm not on an ubuntu system to confirm right now, but is it by chance related to libsdl1.2debian-alsa vs libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio?

Maybe not the error message, but at least the reason invoked by apt...

(btw, it's probably related to Bug #531161, Bug #532534 and Bug #553925)

When I try to install xubuntu-desktop via Synaptic, it tells me it will uninstall ubuntu-desktop and libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio, so I guess that is due to the bugs you mention.

Anyway, if Charlie's affirmation ( "If more than one desktop meta-package is installed when attempting to upgrade using 'updte-manager', the upgrade will fail.") is correct, we should always leave only one xxx-desktop !!! (e.g. the last one)

I filled a new bug : Bug #591985
I think the current bug here is a duplicate of Bug #531161
