CPU for generic-pae kernel should be raised to M686

Bug Description

The CPU for the generic-pae kernel should really be raised to M686, like the old server kernel was. Before Lucid was released, that kernel was raised to M586TSC to fix bug #519448. There is no x86 CPU that supports PAE that would not support the features like CMOV that is necessary for M686, and yes I have checked way beyond Intel/AMD.

Hi Yuhong,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 592495

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

This is a kernel configuration bug, which is why debug logs are not provided.

However, unless I'm mistaken, doing this would prevent the kernel from running on a Geode LX.

No, it wouldn't. And even if it did, I was advocating the change to M686 only for the generic-pae kernel exactly because of the need for the generic kernel to be compatible with old CPUs.
