Bug Description

The bug makes browsing windows (or samba) shares difficult, shares icons are often replaced by a blank one which is not usable.

The patch comes from upstream CVS, some #bugs users have tested the patch and it works fine for them. I've tried it on an edgy installation and it fixes the bug for it too. The patch works fine on feisty too where gnome-vfs2 has been updated (new version has that change) for some weeks now

The bug has already 11 duplicates and would be nice to fix, especially than some people using Ubuntu in corporate environment have expressed that they need a working smb browsing and that this bug is a blocker to use edgy for them

Another unusual symptom is that When in the location "smb:///", each time I press ctrl-R or click the reload button, the icons representing the different workgroups switch between blank, filled with text, and the proper workgroup icon, but not all at the same time, so some will be blank, some will be filled with text, and some might be correct.

This bug still persists with an up-to-date edgy installation.

I just wanted to mention that a "workaround" is to keep pressing the reload button until the proper icons are shown. Only then can they be clicked and the corresponding smb servers accessed.

Yes, bug is still around. When I go to the 'network' location in gnome, I see the 'Windows Network'. When I browse the network, workgroups sometimes appear as a blank icon and I can't access them. Same for computers inside workgroups. When pressing 'reload', network locations switch randomly between a blank icon and the correct icon. See:

http://home.fmf.nl/~writser/ubuntu/asperge_good.png
http://home.fmf.nl/~writser/ubuntu/asperge_wrong.png

I have a DHCP-network at home. I installed Dapper and upgraded to the most recent Edgy. I have not accessed the 'shared folders' applet yet, nor have I edited my samba configuration. So, everything is configured as default.

To emphasize: even if I see the correct icon and refresh Nautilus, it sometimes is converted back to a blank icon (and I can't access the computer / workgroup anymore).

I tried the posted patch and I rebuild the gnome-vfs2_2.16.1-0ubuntu2.dsc package. The result now is that I do not see the blank icons anymore, but I still cannot really use the network. Only two hosts show up, while there really are many hosts... Initially I thought the blank icons (the hosts which are not recognized/accessible) just were not visible anymore, but after thinking it through, that can't be the case. Without the above patch applied, clicking refresh showed different hosts being accessible on every new click. With the patch applied, clicking refresh changes nothing. The same two hosts appear, with the rest of the network being unaccessible.

a co-worker and I were experiencing the same problems on our Ubuntu 6.10 (fresh) installs, I happened to drop by here:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=122292

and the posted work-around:

Modify the following file as noted below and this will fix your problem.

/etc/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/smb-module.conf
 #smb: [daemon] libsmb ----> commented out
 smb: libsmb.so ----> added

that works, for me at least. haven't tried it on the other unit yet. of note is that one of the posters in the thread -clearly- states that this work-around is "quite wrong"

This upload fixes the issue:

 gnome-vfs2 (2.16.2-0ubuntu1) feisty; urgency=low
 .
   * New upstream version:
     - Add a "--replace" commandline argument to gnome-vfs-daemon
       to replace the current daemon. (Mostly for debugging use)
     - Make translations work in gnome-vfs-daemon
     - Handle IPv6 addresses when creating dav uris (DNS-SD)
     - Don't crash if there is no session dbus
     - Support sun ssh server
     - Don't fail getting selinux context
     - Allow operations on file handles that were created in another
       DaemonConnection. (This fixes e.g. smb browsing) (Ubuntu: #60277)
     - Fixes to gnome_vfs_xfer and monitoring (Ubuntu: #54684)
   * debian/patches/24_daemon_set_locale.patch:
     - fixed with the new version
   * debian/patches/90_from_cvs_fix_exit_handler_ordering.patch:
     - patch from CVS, possible fix for an ekiga crashing on closing

I also have tested the package. It runs smoothly. The only problem I found was that a libc upgrade is necessary, I haven't had any problems.
For the installation I downloaded just the dependencies (like 6 packages) and then I used dpkg.

Thanks.

How do you do that please!!! The only thing I found in synaptic is gnome-vfs-extfs, is it the same thing???

I have only downloaded and installed gnome-vfs2 (2.16.2-0ubuntu1), gnomevfs2-common(2.16.2-0ubuntu1) and new libc6 from feisty repository.

I look 2.16.3 available now, but i don't have tested this version yet.

Already I spoke with MOTUs to check if this fix can to be fixed on stable release (edgy).

Thanks

Thx for your answers Seb'

The patches solution seems a bit too complicated for me.

You say feisty package fix the bug, but it's a "pre-beta" and too early for me to move to it.

Do you think we'll have a backport regarding this? in that case I can wait for a while!!

bye

The patches were not meant for users, that's the standard procedure to
get a backport for edgy-updates accepted, you can read about it on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates
The fesity comment was to point that the patch has got some testing to
the people who look on uploads to edgy-proposed

Expanding on what Sebastien Bacher said:

The purpose of bug reports is to help us improve the software.

It's is nice if the information in reports helpful to users too, but
if you really want help you should use support mechanisms - for
example, the Launchpad support request tracker, at
 https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/edgy/+sources/firefox/+addticket
and similar URLs.

So, comments added to bug reports are generally aimed at improving the
software (for example, by trying to understand the problem better) and
not directly at solving your specific problem. And your own comments
should serve that purpose as well.

Thanks,
Ian.
