Probably under 15% of the new computers sold is solo-core. Even those are coming with HT. Voting pro!

ffmpeg-mt is still considered experimental. ffmpeg with multithreaded decoder support will happen once ffmpeg-mt finally gets merged into mainline ffmpeg.

Could we get it as a separate package? rvm used to package mplayer-mt (and related libraries) at https://launchpad.net/~rvm/+archive/testing but has been silent for over 6 months and there's no version for maverick.

This bug is tagged needs-packaging which identifies it as a request for a new package in Ubuntu. As a part of the managing needs-packaging bug reports specification, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/Specs/NeedsPackagingBugs, all needs-packaging bug reports have Wishlist importance. Subsequently, I'm setting this bug's status to Wishlist.

People might want to look at https://launchpad.net/~ripps818/+archive/coreavc. The maintainer there has a multithreaded mplayer package that works great for me. No need to mess around with any of the coreavc stuff...

"A message from the creator of MPlayer, Arpi:
Hi,
It was exactly 10 years ago, that I've released first MPlayer version, v0.01: http://www1.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/old_stuff/releases/MPlayer-0.01.tar.gz Yes, f*cking 10 years!!!! Nov 11, 2000... Time goes on so fast...
I want to thank you all for the contributions, patches, bugs, docs, testing etc. Especially Michael Niedermayer, Fabrice Bellard and Nick Kurshev, who made it to be the best & fastest open-source player!
>>>And sorry Nick, I made a big mistake rejecting your multi-threaded patches. Unfortunatelly your idea came too early, nobody (at least me) thought that desktop PCs will ever have multiple CPUs... and now that even cheap notebooks and netbooks have multi-core CPUs, it would be very useful for HD playback...<<<
Also special thanks to Gabucino, Pontscho and LGB, for your support in the early days, when everybody thought i'm mad, working on video player for linux...
A'rpi
ps: Albeu, i'll never forgive your playtree patches :)"

So, there is any movement to accepting Nick pathces to upstream mplayer?

I guess it's pretty much official that the original MPlayer is on the road to deprecation.

There is PPA with mplayer2 package : ppa:ripps818/coreavc (package have name "mplayer").
Probably better to replace current mplayer to mplayer2, becuse of http://www.mplayer2.org/comparison.html

The mplayer in my CoreAVC-for-Ubuntu ppa (ppa:ripps818/coreavc) is actually mplayer2. I've been using it since before it became an official fork. I just haven't renamed the package and it's version yet. I'm still considering the best method to transition people already using the ppa to the fork's new name and version without interfering with the current installation/upgrade model in place.

couldn't you make your "mplayer" package a meta or dummy package for an "mplayer" package with proper versioning?

When can we expect Ubuntu to include mplayer2?
Is it possible to have both mplayer and mplayer2 on the same system via PPA?
