Bug Description

Binary package hint: debian-installer

During ISO-Installation testing, I was not presented the option of adding http proxy (step 16 of the test guide). The installation proceeded to install after entering my password confirmation.

I've tested the Ubuntu 10.10 Alpha3 alternate i386 install iso on this morning and it has the same bug.

The installer asked for the network mirror only. There was no option to define a proxy server on my network. I have to use a proxy for the Internet connections.

I tested the latest Ubuntu 10.10 Beta alternate i386 install iso, and still don't ask for proxy configuration when I chose the network mirror. So this regression still exist in Maverick Beta. Please add proxy support to the alternate installer.

I'm almost certain I saw the proxy step pop up a couple of times before on alpha3 and later images.

Just in case, as you go through the installation, is there a network connection detected?

I run trough the installation with the expert option. I manually setup the network when the installer asked for. So I think the network connection has been detected. Moreover when I set the network connection (IP address, netmask, gateway, DNS) the machine was able to figure out the own name and the domain. This test machine has a fix IP address and registered in the DNS.

And one more comment for #4:

Mathieu did you use proxy server to reach the Internet? Or you just "almost" certain you saw the proxy step...

So my choice was: expert options and install command line system at the first boot screen.

I'm certain I didn't saw the proxy step after I chose the network mirror. I tested an Ubuntu 10.04 alternate install iso (just for sure) and at this time the installer asked for proxy settings. I think this is a bug in the Ubuntu 10.10 alternate installer and 10.04 don't have this issue.

Here are other Q/A reports:

Yes, I know these reports against Kubuntu alternate, however the Ubuntu and Kubuntu are using the nearly same alternate installer.

Sorry if I expressed myself wrong, the goal was not to doubt your results but rather to try to find a reason in configuration and choices during the installer that would cause it not to ask for proxy info. I tried d-i on server with a standard server install and a JeOS install on ESX, as well as an install of alternate on actual hardware and can confirm this bug.

I've attached the contents of /var on the installer, hoping this will help.

I've tried the daily Ubuntu 10.10 alternate install iso today (20. 09. 2010.). So I downloaded the following iso:

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/20100920/maverick-alternate-i386.iso

And the installer still don't ask for proxy configuration when I chose the network mirror. The RC release is coming soon. I think this is a serious bug. I'm just wondering why this bug hasn't fixed yet?

I've tested the Ubuntu 10.10 RC alternate i386 install iso and it seems to me the bug has not fixed yet.

8 days left for the final version. Please fix this bug!

IMHO this is a serious bug in the alternate install CD.

This bug was fixed in the package choose-mirror - 2.33ubuntu2

---------------
choose-mirror (2.33ubuntu2) maverick; urgency=low

  * Fix mismerge of Ubuntu-specific change to skip mirror validation if the
base system is installable and we're installing from a mirror in the
masterlist. With the reorganisation of suite validation in 2.30,
exiting early meant that the proxy question never got asked. Instead,
modify get_release and check_arch to return early in this case, but
    otherwise keep going (LP: #613550).
