Well I don't see an upgraded package yet, may be hard to test when it shows up unless it also fixes this current bug (if you have it

this is still happening to me even with the most recent updates. I tried to install a .deb package manually, but it crashed after entering my password.

 i remember vaguely that some of my problems were resolved by removing
ubuntu-desktop and installing it again...
It is a long shot, but maybe worth a try?

This bug was fixed in the package gdebi - 0.6.2ubuntu1

---------------
gdebi (0.6.2ubuntu1) maverick; urgency=low

  * merged from bzr trunk, this can be later synced with debian
    once debian has a newer version, nothing ubuntu specific
    in this anymore

  [ Michael Vogt ]
  * debian/control:
    - depend on the latest python-apt to get the "dump()"
      method
  * GDebi/GDebi.py:
    - synaptics config is always stored under /root

  [ Andrew Higginson ]
  * GDebi/GDebi.py:
    - Read whether we autoclose from synaptic config
      file and write to it as well (LP: #376966)

  [ Michal Simunek ]
  * po/cs.po:
    - Update Czech translation (Closes: #590848).

  [ Luca Falavigna ]
  * GDebi/GDebiKDE.py:
    - Switch back to kdesudo, kdesu isn't available anymore both in
      Debian and Ubuntu (Closes: #591306).
  * GDebi/GDebi.py:
    - Adjust FetchProgressAdapter namespace, fix NameError exception
      trying to install packages which requires more dependencies
      (LP: #614690).
