Can't start X server. X server appears to have D-stated. This started happening with one of the recent (around 23 Sept) X updates.

Does booting without the splash screen (remove the "splash" option from the kernel boot option in Grub) fix it ?

If so I've seen the same thing on another Intel graphics chipset laptop.

Booting without splash does nothing.

But booting 2.6.17-7-generic (instead of -9-generic) fixes it fine. Having had a more indepth look at -9-generic, a lot of things seem to be doing a lot of complaining in dmesg.

I did get ACPI complaints from -9- as well, or at least that's when I noticed them, but they went away when I did a BIOS upgrade. I'm out of ideas then, sorry!

This also happens with -10, I am wondering if the tosh_acpi module is somehow implicated.

Blacklisting toshiba_acpi, resolves this issue and allows me to boot -10 (of course, now I can't change my LCD brightness).

Restarting acpid without toshiba_acpi blacklisted wrote this backtrace into the syslog.

Hardy Heron 8.04 was recently released. It would be helpful if you could test the new release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . You should be able to test your bug using the LiveCD. Please let us know your results. Thanks.
