Bug Description

Real Player

Summery: Conflict loading - go to advance (then what - go back to my old system or spend three hours or more trying to figure it out.)

Solution 1:
Fix conflict so it works. (with existing program)

Solution 2:
- need a program (find or create) that recognizes .dat files and executes the program with a clicked of the mouse. None of this termial crap if we want the main stream Joe(y) using this OS. This is a fundamental program for a large part of the win world.

Solution 3:
need - google video - the termal, how it works, the command structure. so noobs can fix there own problem fast and not BUG this group. I would watch that and so would a lot of other people.

the rest is what started this buggy problem ...
Just installed linux ubuntu for the first time been with win since dos. I work on all my friends computers because I trouble shoot so good.

But I can not install real player and the instructions seem are over my head, the resources have no examples and the ones that do have examples they are minumim.

If I can not figure it out after an hour then simpletons will not be able to either and Real Player is essential software to have along with PDF and Flash (which installed on its own with one click). There needs to be a program that see's it is a .dat file and just does the rest with a click of the mouse. Lets not wait for real player to make it easy we need to do it. I wish I had the know how or I would do it but alas, that is not my fortay.

My fortay is turning all my friends on to Linux and get them away from the resource eating MS.

I am migrating and want to make it easy for my friends to do the same. Because I do not want to do any more house keeping on there winchines.

Real Player installs and operates fine here. I think the solution you are seeking can be found via https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

Also, you can enable universe and multiverse repositories, and 'sudo apt-get install mozilla-firefox' as that will help you out a little bit.

Also if possible, re-word your bugs in the future so they follow the Ubuntu Code of Conduct (http://www.ubuntu.com/community/conduct). I know it gets frustrating at times, but no reason to take it out here. Everyone in the world is a so-called n00b as you put it, so no need to talk down people who aren't as familiar with computers just yet.

Now migrating from Windows for your first time to Linux will take a massive amount of patience. For some reason a lot of people think that Linux is the same thing as Microsoft. Go over the Restricted Formats page I posted and you should be fine. Any more issues arise we will be more than happy to help. Thank you!

Hello there,

The latest version of realplayer is actually available from Canonical's commercial software repository, please see here:

http://ubuntu.wordpress.com/2006/07/08/introducing-the-dapper-commercial-repository/

You should uninstall any existing instances of realplayer before installing the package from this repository.

Please understand that the ubuntu community can not generally support commercial software, or software that is not installed using the package management system.
