Bug Description

When I upgraded from Kubuntu Dapper drake to te Edgy Eft beta by using the dist upgrade commands, X does not work after the reboot. The screen stays blank and after a while the text based login screen opens.

Both the 2.6.17.x series kernel and the 2.6.15.27 kernel from dapper did not work as well.

Hardware configuration.

Ati Radeon X800 pro video card.
ATI fglrx driver.

Only text based login is possible.

Note: Someone last night on #kubuntu couldn't use the Edgy LiveCD and he was using the same exact video card.

Anyways, could you please post the content of:

/var/log/Xorg.0.log

Post it in a reply, this will help us troubleshoot the problem. Thank you for this!

status: Unconfirmed → Needs Info

Her is the Xorg.0.log output

It is a large one so I have attached it as a file.
It looks like the x init process fails.

I had the same problem with two machines (32 and 64 bits, see lspci output below)

After turn off "splash" of my kernel, I can get the console and run 'startx' manualy and works.

So, I can see two problems:

1-) splash is broken and the monitor was 100% black after startup
2-) gdm don't works, but startx works.

root@tuxkiller:~# cat /etc/issue

root@tuxkiller:~# uname -a
Linux tuxkiller 2.6.17-10-386 #2 Tue Sep 26 16:51:46 UTC 2006 i686 GNU/Linux

Thanks a lot!

Hi

I tried reconfiguring X by using the command sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

But still the same probs an no X.

Here is a new logfile.

Maybe this information will help, since I know X does not like dual head video cards.

Video card X800 pro
TFT screen 19 inch max resolution 75 hz.
Screen is connected via DVI connection.

My experience immediately following upgrade, then reboot, was the same, but the video card on this laptop is:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Trident Microsystems CyberBlade XP4m32 (rev 91)

What seemed to fix things in this case was to comment out the xorg.conf line to load dri. Because I was getting this error in Xorg.0.log:

(EE) AIGLX: DRI module not loaded

I was also having a problem with the pointer device being /dev/mouse, a file which didn't exist on this system, instead of /dev/input/mice.

I got X up and running, it seemed that the xorg.conf reverted back to the "ati" driver instead of the "fglrx" driver.

I commentented out the "dri" line.

This is what I think is the root cause for the X issue. I advise to check for fglrx dependency during the upgrade process or more users will have a nasty suprise when they upgrade.
