1. sudo aptitude install smuxi
2. Launch smuxi-frontend-gnome

This is a bug in the libindicate0.1-cil package that Smuxi makes use of, see #832222

This workaround should fix it, simple install that package by hand using:
apt-get install libindicate0.1-cil

Now Smuxi should start normally again

This bug was fixed in the package smuxi - 0.8-7build1
