I'm getting same error, during upgrading to 10.10 from 10.04. After that failed I went to update utility and tried to update and I get also error.

Here is the report I get (sorry, it's in Finnish, but you peeps get the point probably):

 Valmistellaan paketin deskbar-applet 2.30.0-0ubuntu1 vaihtamista (käyttäen pakettia .../deskbar-applet_2.30.1-1ubuntu1_i386.deb)...

 Puretaan korvaavaa deskbar-applet-pakettia...

 dpkg: virhe käsiteltäessä /var/cache/apt/archives/deskbar-applet_2.30.1-1ubuntu1_i386.deb (--unpack):

  trying to overwrite directory '/usr/lib/deskbar-applet/deskbar-applet' in package libdeskbar-tracker 0.6.95-1ubuntu6 with nondirectory

 No apport report written because MaxReports is reached already
 dpkg-deb: signaali (paste)Katkennut putki tappoi aliprosessin

 Suoritetaan kohteen python-support liipaisimia...

 Käsittelyssä tapahtui liian monta virhettä:

I think I fixed it by simply removing the deskbar-applet and installing it again:

sudo apt-get remove deskbar-applet
sudo apt-get install deskbar-applet

Uploaded to Maverick, package is in the Archive-Admins queue, should be accepted and built in a maximum of 8 hours.

deskbar-applet (2.30.1-1ubuntu2) maverick; urgency=low

  * debian/control:
    - Remove Vcs-Bzr field, as the bzr branch is not updated anymore.
    - Add package libdeskbar-tracker to Conflicts as it doesn't exist
      anymore in Maverick. This is done to force the removal of the package
      on systems upgrading from the Lucid version. (LP: #654392)
