Bug Description

Maverick 10.10 64bit Server version - gnome/vnc

Have installed "gnome-core" and vnc4server on the server and am connecting to it via TightVNC

Whenever I hit the letter "d" in the gnome desktop the window I'm typing in is minimized. This issue occurs when typing in a Terminal or Text Editor so am pretty much unable to do anything in either of them that involves me typing the letter d. eg. sudo apt-get install deluge would minimize the window on the d of deluge. Typing d whilst the window is minimized doesn't enter the character in the window so it looks like there's no workaround.

Issue is new in Maverick. Works fine in Lucid, Karmic, Jaunty, Intrepid.

I have the same problem after upgrading to Maverick 10.10 from 10.04.
My VNC server package is vnc4server.

This bug also happens in NXclient (No Machine client). That is, when I type "d" in a terminal in a NXclient session, the terminal window is minimized. There was no problem in Lucid 10.04.

here's a weird thing.

capital D works fine.

i.e. capslock - then hit 'd' works fine

shift-d works fine.

However. put capslock on and do a shift-d and you get a minimize again.

ok, it appears D is being bound to "Hide all normal windows and set focus to the desktop"

can't remove that binding, but can set it to something innocuous.

Good spot Shaya Potter. In Lucid that same shortcut is accessed via Crtl+Alt+D. I've changed my Maverick version to that.

This bug is also affecting me, except my issue was present on an upgraded 32-bit machine. I modified the binding as suggested by Shaya, and it works perfectly now, Thanks!

disagree, I did an upgrade and saw it (it might have been fixed since then, as this is many months old now, but it was definitely an upgrade)

Here's a workaround someone pointed out - I think this is also the root cause. I've tested it and it works for me:

This seems to be an issue with the <SUPER> key getting set as "always on" when going over VNC. I've seen it with multiple VNC clients.

Manually editing the "D" shortcut doesn't fully fix the problem. Double-clicking over VNC resultings in <SUPER>-Double Click, closing the windows.

I am using vnc4server on Ubuntu 11.04.

I consider this to be a big deal. Remote desktop is a major feature to have broken like this.

seeing that with debian7

vnc4server 4.1.1+X4.3.0-3

gnome-shell 3.4.2-7+deb7u1

Clients are irrelevant. Tested with realvnc linux, windows, PocketCloud IOS6, IOS7 and Android. and others.

was this fixed in newer versions of what ubuntu ships so i can open a proper request at debian? I can only see references up to ubuntu 11.04 here.

This wasn't a problem for me in 12.04 LTS however after upgrading to 14.04 LTS VNC now has the stuck super key with makes s & d unable to be used. I've tried disabling the hotkeys with ccsm however it won't stay fixed and is only localized to a single user. Extremely troublesome as it effectively makes X and VNC unusable remotely on my servers.

I resolved this a long time ago. So long ago that I forget what I did.

I think there's something in the .vnc startup user script that triggered it.

As reported in
Pressing "h" hides the window Edit
Ubuntu “vnc4” package Bugs Bug #1297904

Installed RCN build of 14.04 on BBB, added gnome-desktop, tightvncserver. At first VNC connect, plain gray screen with X cursor in VNC. Edited .vnc/xstartup per http://askubuntu.com/questions/475023/how-to-make-vnc-server-work-with-ubuntu-desktop-without-xfce.

Now works, except 's' and 'd' are always shortcuts to system menu and minimize all. So it isn't just vnc4 or 13.10...
Also up and down arrows are max/minimize! Can't use command history!

I fixed the 's' with dconf-editor:
in org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings,
Toggle shaded state was ['<Primary><Alt>s']
No idea what "shaded" has to do with showing the system menu...

'd':
Hide all normal windows
['<Primary><Super>d', '<Primary><Alt>d', '<Super>d']

Also maximize and unmaximize... Actually I searched for "keybin" (couldn't type the 'd'!) and zapped anything with <Super> in it.

This would be easier if I could navigate in the dconf-editor window. My mouse wheel moves several screenfulls up or down per "click", clicking above or below the scroll thumb moves way more than a screenfull, and dragging the thumb moves the content about 1/8 of cursor distance. The only reliable way to see all of the entries is to use the down arrow key to step through all of them!

And I'm only using dconf because somehow my System->Preferences->Keyboard Shortcuts panel is missing - just not there... Can't find any clues how to fix that.

This kind of thing is why Linux is a niche market.

Hey, I have the same problem with the vnc viewer. (I'm using Tight VNC Viewer on Ubuntu 14.04)

I set now all keyboard shortcuts to disabled, however d is still minimizing the window and up and down arrows minimize and maximize the window. Only s is working. (I think, this was related to the Super Shortcut)

Any other ideas, what I could try, to get d and up and down working again?

Best
Juliane

I had this problem 6 years ago now... I think it was something I put in
the .vnc startup file that fixed it.

But I don't remember. Sorry.

To make 's' working I had to change org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings:activate-binding-menu in dconf-editor from ['<Alt>space'] to [] in addition to changes suggested in #21.

I had the problem with "d" showing the desktop and other single key issues. I found that I made a mistake in my "~/.vnc/xstartup". I had 2 window managers configured: "startxfce4 &" and "x-window-manager &". After I removed the later, I no longer had the single key issues.
