DistUpgraders output window should be resizable and initial size should fit the screen

Thanks for taking the time to report this. What is your current screen resolution?

S10e has a resolution of 1024x576. But I don't think that update-manager shoould be optimized for a specific resolution or would you like to add a logic showing scrollbars if a resolution <=576 is present?

I just confirmed it on my netbook as well as a virtual machine. Seems like when you start update manager it creates its own window instead of "integrating" itself like other applications. I am marking this as confirmed and I will talk to bug-control about adding this to "wishlist".

This has still been a problem during transition from 10.10 to 11.04-beta. The window is too small to adequately click or resize the window, being a pain if any errors occur or you want to track anything during upgrade.

Reassigning to the aptdaemon package, as aptdaemon contains the dialogs for showing the progress, update-manager only uses them.

There are two related issues here, right? For small screens the output window's size is bigger than the screen (668638, 798496, ...). For large screens the output window is small and not resizable (664415, 739647).

Correct - 2 issues: on the one hand you cannot click the buttons of the surrounding window, on the other console's output cannot be resized.

The same is still evident when updating to 11.10.

This bug is still evident when upgrading to 11.10 - if the console window of update-manager is expanded the window does not fit onto the screen. Since it's not resizable one cannot reach the action buttons at the screen's bottom.

The bug reports are about the distribution upgrader and not the normal update-manager progress window. So reassign to update-manager.

Problem in normal update-manager too! This is pain on netbooks screen

This is a major usability issue for the upgrade that has still not been addressed after at least 3 releases.

Here are some details of the pain:
- I can not see the complete list of packages that will be installed/upgraded/deleted: the bottom of the window is out of the screen
- Once I have access to that list, I can not view the action buttons under it to either accept or decline the upgrade. I can not access them with the mouse, and I have to blindly navigate the controls with the tab key.
- I can not view the bottom of the terminal window during the upgrade
- If I remember well I also had problem with the windows that asked me about config files upgrade

My netbook is an Asus Eee Pc 1005HA. Screen size is 1024 x 600 pixels.

Still the same during upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04 - it's not possible to access the buttons of the update-manager's window if the console window is expanded. It's not possible to minimize or resize the window itself to make it fit onto the screen.

Confirming the issue on the 11.10 to 12.04 upgrade. My netbook has a 1024x600 screen.

I can't understand why this issue is only marked "Importance: medium". This is a major issue in a component developed by the Ubuntu team, with no workaround.

Note that this is not only the "output window" (labelled Terminal) that has this size problem. The dialog showing the list of the installed/upgraded/removed packages is also affected as shown on my "Capture of the 12.04 upgrade details" attachment.

The current graphical installer for 12.10 solved this problem, but I'm not sure about the textual install or upgrade since I've upgraded the box with a fresh SSD-install - could anyone check whether the same problem is still eminent for 'regular' dist-upgrades?

Bug still present while upgrading (dist-upgrade) from 21.04 to 21.10 the window (ui) is not resizable after the details window is enlarged (with > button). Cannot see or click the bottom buttons in the "Distribution Upgrade (as superuser)" window.
