Bug Description

In order to begin live session with edgy I've put these parameters: noapic nolapic fb=false. In this way, live session begins with no problem.

In the process of instalation, it recognizes well the hard drive with its partitions, but after putting all the configuration, it gets freezed at 15% and no progress are shown. The light of the hard disk is all the time on, but there are no progress in this work.

I've been running "top" at the same time of installation and after "udevd" and "parted_server" appeared, the installation freezed. I've been watching at the pstree and I think the problem could be in this group of precess:

gksudo-ubiquity-------debconf-communi
                             |- log-output------partman-commit----50format_ext3--- -log-output-----tune2fs

At the current time, only Hoary distribution is the one that has worked in this laptop, and the others have failed, ubuntu or not ubuntu. :-(

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug before the final version of Edgy was released. We were wondering is this still an issue with Edgy? Thanks in advance.

Yes still continues with the final version of edgy. :-(

The only free OS that works fine is freeBSD. Maybe this info will be
helful for you.

Thank you to all launchpad staff :-)

Hi, all. I can confirm that the problem described (at least the manifestation I experienced) is still an issue with the 7.10 x86 standard graphical installer, which I downloaded on 2/28/2008. I ran into the problem on a system with multiple hard disks, all containing preexisting filesystems, all of which were mounted when I originally tried to run the installer. I documented everything I did to get the installer to progress past 15% here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4429985#post4429985

Many related bugs suggest kernel problems, but I actually found partman to be the likely culprit, specifically /lib/partman/commit.d/01unmount_busy, which I had to kill (after unmounting all filesystems) in order to get the installer to continue. The installer *did*, however, pick back up essentially where it left off and completed without another hitch. What I'm not sure of is whether partman's "busy" script is hanging because ubiquity didn't do a good enough job of prompting the user and/or unmounting partitions before launching partman, or whether there's something wrong with the script causing it to hang in some circumstances.

What tipped me off about '01unmount_busy' was the fact that it was consuming over 60% of the CPU, presumably waiting for the partition I was installing to (which was mounted at the time) to become free. I didn't really have the opportunity to digest what was going on inside the script, but it was definitely solely responsible for the lockup at 15% in my case.

The 18 month support period for Edgy Eft 6.10 has reached it's end of life. As a result, we are closing the linux-source-2.6.17 Edgy Eft kernel task.

Hardy Heron 8.04 was recently released. It would be helpful if you could test the new release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download . You should be able to test your bug using the LiveCD. Please let us know your results. Thanks.

Due to the incompatibility of this laptop I sold it, and bought a Dell
with Linux preinstalled, so no more bugs from my part :-)

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
