Bug Description

Binary package hint: ppa-purge

Since version 0.8.8ubuntu3 apt works with compressed indexes, so those '/var/lib/apt/lists/*Packages' files now are '/var/lib/apt/lists/*Packages.gz' and ppa-purge fails with:

"Warning: Could not find package list for PPA: ..."

Apt moved back to uncompressed indicies, changing this to wishlist for now.

apt (0.8.9ubuntu4) natty; urgency=low

  [ Michael Vogt ]
  * cmdline/apt-key:
    - set timeout of wget for net-update to 90 seconds (thanks to \sh)

  [ Martin Pitt ]
  * Revert r1819 and r1820 to disable compressed indexes by default again.
    Testing has brought up a few places where this seriously degrades
    performance, mostly in applications which iterate through all available
    package records, like update-apt-xapian-index or synaptic. See

I'm using Acquire::GzipIndexes "true" for apt since multiple years, didn't encounter any trouble until recently with ppa-purge.

While I can understand the trouble for something that might not be really common, it would be helpful to at least have an explicit warning or abort in ppa-purge when indexes are compressed.

Thanks
