Bug Description
Binary package hint: pcmanfm
I discovered this bug while (unsuccessfully) attempting to test for https:/
In this bug report, I use the term "bookmarks area" to designate the area in a PCManFM window that lists bookmarks.
In PCManFM 0.9.8 (package version 0.9.8-1, installed by lubuntu-desktop 0.19) on a 32-bit Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal Alpha 1 system, I tried to create a bookmark by dragging a folder's icon into the bookmarks area. This did not succeed. Furthermore, while holding the folder's icon over the bookmarks area, the pointer icon indicating that I was attempting to perform an impossible drag-and-drop operation showed.
In case it's useful, on this system the output of "uname -a" is:
Linux Gnar 2.6.37-7-generic #19-Ubuntu SMP Tue Nov 30 23:46:45 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
Manually added bookmarks (by modifying .gtk-bookmarks in the home directory) are still displayed and work correctly; they also can be renamed and removed without incident.
That was the only "workaround" I tried that worked--these workarounds did not:
(1) .gtk-bookmarks did not exist in my home directory, so I created it with default permissions (using /usr/bin/touch) and then tried again.
(2) After [1], I rebooted and tried again.
(3) I added a (valid) entry to .gtk-bookmarks, with the idea that PCManFM might be able to create a second entry, and tried again.
(4) I logged in remotely via ssh -X and ran pcmanfm. This was to create a PCManFM window belonging to a pcmanfm instance not run with the "--desktop --profile lubuntu" command-line arguments (this system runs LXDE). As expected, it still didn't work; however, this enabled me to see the debugging output. The console displayed these messages when I attempted to drag a folder into the bookmarks area:
** (pcmanfm:2079): DEBUG: device_added: /org/freedeskto
** (pcmanfm:2079): DEBUG: device_added: /org/freedeskto

In contrast, when I successfully add a bookmark via drag-and-drop in in PCManFM through a remote ssh -X login on a PCManFM 0.9.7 installation that works correctly (i.e. not the system suffering from Bug 635849), I get just this message instead:
** (pcmanfm:1962): DEBUG: FmJob error: No such file or directory
