Bug Description

When running with dual monitors, Unity will use the height of the larger one for calculating when to fold, even when it's being shown on the smaller monitor. This leaves icons inaccessible hanging off of the bottom of the launcher.

 importance high

... would be critical if more people used dual screens and if it were
nto possible to fix with a fiddle of screen layout. Nevertheless, we
should be smart about this circumstance and get it right.

I'm not sure how much it's relevant, but since I'm looking at bug 675862 which is similar: I think the launcher should be handled in a similar way as the panel would be. As such, the code I have to far for bug 675862 resizes both the panel and launcher to the size of the monitor they are being shown on.

My reasoning is that if the panel spanning on multiple monitors is an issue, the launcher doing the same will likely be as well for monitor configurations with multiple monitors on top of each other. Limiting the size of both those windows to the size of the "primary" screen fixes folding as well. Hopefully I'm not missing some discussion about this from the ayatana ML.

Should this be marked as a duplicate, or am I looking at it wrong?

I want to add that the solution to this problem isn't a purely technical one. It needs input from the interaction-design side of things. How should the panel and launcher behave and speard with different monitor-setups, considering the possibilities of interaction with mouse, fingers or both. Better do this right from the start, so we don't have wrong design-decisions haunt us over and over again later on. Adding ayatana-design.

macslow: I'm hoping that the *behaviour* is covered by bug #683084 ("Global menu doesn't work well with more than one screen"), which certainly does have design implications.

This bug itself is probably more technically, just refreshing the height used in calculations to be that of the local screen it's running on.
