package pidgin-data 1:2.7.7-1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite '/usr/share/pixmaps/pidgin/protocols/48/facebook.png', which is also in package pidgin-facebookchat 1.67.1-1

This might only happen if you have pidgin-facebookchat installed (as I did). If you remove pidgin-facebookchat and then update it works. However I found that:

  sudo aptitude remove pidgin-facebookchat

failed with the first solution:

  Upgrade the following packages:
  pidgin-data [1:2.7.7-1ubuntu0+pidgin1.10.04 (now) -> 1:2.7.9-1ubuntu0+pidgin1.10.04 (lucid)]

but worked with the second:

  Downgrade the following packages:
  pidgin [1:2.7.9-1ubuntu0+pidgin1.10.04 (lucid, now) -> 1:2.6.6-1ubuntu4.3 (lucid-proposed)]
  pidgin-data [1:2.7.7-1ubuntu0+pidgin1.10.04 (now) -> 1:2.6.6-1ubuntu4.3 (lucid-proposed)]

the issue is rather a pidgin-facebook one that a pidgin bug, the issue only affects natty and users who manually install pidgin-facebook so there is no hurry to fix the issue, let's wait for debian to pick a solution since there is different way to solve that and we don't want to pick a different one, seems the breaks would be wrong, the icon should rather be renamed in pidgin-facebook to avoid the conflict

Same problem. Even with 2.7.9 too and facebook plugin 1.6.9

E: /var/cache/apt/archives/pidgin-facebookchat_1.67.1-1_i386.deb: trying to overwrite '/usr/share/pixmaps/pidgin/protocols/16/facebook.png', which is also in package pidgin-data 1

I think we should remove
/usr/share/pixmaps/pidgin/protocols/*/facebook.png
from pidgin-data package and leave pidgin-facebookchat to provide such icons.

I'll add a simple Replaces: to pidgin for now. If Debian actually wants to move the files around, we can revert this easily enough.

This bug was fixed in the package pidgin - 1:2.7.9-1ubuntu2

I am sure it is not a right solution. It is better to delete duplicated icons from one of affected packages or put icons into external package.

Has the 'fix' been released?

 i don't know, it seems not ready
