Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

I have an old Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 laptop which previously ran intrepid out of the box. In attempting to upgrade to a supported version of ubuntu, I have installed maverick.

The wireless card no longer works under Network Manager.

I have detailed my attempts to get this functioning on askubuntu.com

http://askubuntu.com/questions/25133/how-can-i-configure-the-embedded-wireless-card-in-a-toshiba-satellite-pro-4600-to

I have filed this bug under network-manager as according to the orinoco page on linuxwireless.org, a known issue of the driver is the necessity of using the ap_scan=2 mode when the driver is controlled via wpa_supplicant.

The card can be made to work by manually configuring wpa_supplicant config files in this way, however NM does not use these traditional config files, and so the parameter must be passed to wpa_supplicant by NM, which appears to be impossible.

Why this has evolved as a regression is not clear to me, however I'm sure someone with a better understanding of the wireless network stack could explain it.

There is no indication of any issue connecting in the natty logs you provided (or maverick, for that matter); at least that I can see. Did you apply your workaround before submitting information? If so, please revert and provide the logs from /var/log/syslog again so we can figure out where the issue is.

Hi Mathieu. I'm grateful that someone has taken an interest in this bug.

If you have a look at the wifisyslog (basically the dmesg output), you'll notice that another pcmcia network card was inserted and recognised by the system. This was to enable the reporting of the bug. You can clearly see the repeated phrase "doesn't support manual roaming" which is the well-established symptom of this bug.

I used the apport-collect command to add information to the bug.

If you have a close look at the daemon.log (generated under maverick), you can see the detailed output of NM and wpa_supplicant as they attempt to connect to the access point and fail.

As far as I can determine there is no workaround for this bug using the NM / wpa_supplicant stack - unless you count using different hardware ;-)

Setting bug back to confirmed (clearly there are other duplicates with similar symptoms).

Reassigning to the linux package. Seems like the orinoco driver for this pccard wrongly reports supporting scans, and this is why NM uses ap_scan=1 rather than ap_scan=2:

        /* Check for the ability to scan specific SSIDs. Until the scan_capa
         * field gets added to wireless-tools, need to work around that by casting
         * to the custom structure.
         */
        scan_capa_range = (struct iw_range_with_scan_capa *) ⦥
        if (scan_capa_range->scan_capa & NM_IW_SCAN_CAPA_ESSID) {
                priv->has_scan_capa_ssid = TRUE;
                nm_log_info (LOGD_HW | LOGD_WIFI,
                             "(%s): driver supports SSID scans (scan_capa 0x%02X).",
                             nm_device_get_iface (NM_DEVICE (self)),
                             scan_capa_range->scan_capa);
        } else {
                nm_log_info (LOGD_HW | LOGD_WIFI,
                             "(%s): driver does not support SSID scans (scan_capa 0x%02X).",
                             nm_device_get_iface (NM_DEVICE (self)),
                             scan_capa_range->scan_capa);
        }

If the scan_capa parameter (which comes from the kernel, essentially a SIOCGIWRANGE ioctl call) returns 0x01, ap_scan=1 is used, otherwise NM uses ap_scan=2 for wpasupplicant.

Thanks again for your help Mathieu. My understanding is that the importance of the bug needs to be set by someone in the bug-squad? According to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance, it appears to fall into the "high" category. "A problem with an essential hardware component (disk controller, laptop built-in wireless, video card, keyboard, mouse)".

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report on this issue.

However, given the number of bugs that the Kernel Team receives during any development cycle it is impossible for us to review them all. Therefore, we occasionally resort to using automated bots to request further testing. This is such a request.

We have noted that there is a newer version of the development kernel currently in the release pocket than the one you tested when this issue was found. Please test again with the newer kernel and indicate in the bug if this issue still exists or not.

If the bug still exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Confirmed. If the bug no longer exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Fix Released.

Brad Figg (brad-figg) wrote : Test with newer development kernel (3.0.0-12.20)

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report on this issue.

However, given the number of bugs that the Kernel Team receives during any development cycle it is impossible for us to review them all. Therefore, we occasionally resort to using automated bots to request further testing. This is such a request.

We have noted that there is a newer version of the development kernel than the one you last tested when this issue was found. Please test again with the newer kernel and indicate in the bug if this issue still exists or not.

If the bug still exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Confirmed. If the bug no longer exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Fix Released.

Thank you for your help, we really do appreciate it.

Still present in the release kernel for oneiric.

Is there sufficient information for this bug importance to be triaged? If not, then what further information is required?

I have not collected an apport trace for this kernel as the error and symptoms are identical to above. If a bug squad member or developer needs further information, I still have this hardware ready to be tested.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the release candidate kernel versus the daily build. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I've tested two versions of the mainline kernel, both RC9 and RC10 of the 3.1 kernel as well as daily builds from 20111022 and 20111217. Bug still exists with the same symptoms. Unfortunately launchpad won't let up upload an automatic apport update as I'm running a mainline kernel.

Do I also need to remove the kernel-request tags as well as the needs-upstream-testing tags?

If anybody would like a workaround using wicd, then I recently helped somebody on the ubuntuforums http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=12164548&postcount=20 with this bug. With wicd you can manually set ap_scan=2 by editing a file. Hope it helps somebody!

This bug was filed against a series that is no longer supported and so is being marked as Won't Fix. If this issue still exists in a supported series, please file a new bug.

This change has been made by an automated script, maintained by the Ubuntu Kernel Team.
