Bug Description

I'm opening this item in response to Ingo Gerth's question at askubuntu (http://askubuntu.com/questions/26104/8844/will-there-be-a-ubuntu-serif-font-in-the-future) .
The version there is short, but even shorter:
Are there plans for an Ubuntu Serif font in the future?

We definitely would love to do it! But unfortunately, there are no plans, afaik. I think we need to focus on driving the current Ubuntu font suite forward, completing the current set for May and then expanding the fonts with language and other support. Chinese is increasingly becoming a requirement since successful localisation depends on a good Chinese design with comprehensive glyph support.

Jgbel: Whether there is an Ubuntu Serif counterpart depends on whether anyone comes forward to drawn and engineer it!

Designing a typeface takes a _very_ long time. The first five scripts (Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, Hebrew) are being "bootstrapped" by Dalton Maag, with Dalton Maag taking the lead in order to give a firm base and footing. Once those five scripts and thirteen fonts are done, the community focus will begin to ramp up and we can start the really big expansion projects (Chinese, Thai, Devanagari ... or even a Serif) depending on which type designers come forward.

If you'd like to see an Ubuntu Serif counterpart, the best thing would be to find a type designer who'd like to work on the project with you. Dalton Maag should still be able to offer direction and guidance but the key to increase the number of people working on the Ubuntu Font Family so that we are not limited by the present!

Yes, there can be the possibility of an Ubuntu Serif, but you need to make it happen. Really, really good screen fonts unfortunately don't magic themselves out of thin air!

I've set this to Won't Fix. If/when a team comes forward to arrange it, with a type designer who can actually do it, we can't change that and get things in motion!
