Digikam in repo is lagging, compiling is hard

Bug Description

Binary package hint: digikam

The Digikam version in the repo (0.82) is lagging the current version (0.9.0b3). 0.82 has at least one critical bug (adding a title to a photo makes it disappear!) that is fixed in 0.9.0b3.

0.9.0b3 is very hard to build from sources because it wants you to downgrade your Qt (>= Qt 3.2 and < 4.0), which, as an unqualified n00b, I don't know how to do safely.

If someone is smart enough to build Digikam 0.9.0b3 from sources and put a binary in the repo, it would fix the bug.

For the impatient ;), in case you use dapper you can download inofficial 0.9-b3 pkgs from

http://www.mpe.mpg.de/~ach/kubuntu/dapper/Pkgs.php#digikam
http://www.mpe.mpg.de/~ach/kubuntu/dapper/Pkgs.php#libexiv2-0.10

For 0.9 RC1 released today or tomorrow I'll create inofficial edgy and and dapper pkgs.

If and only _if_ rc1 proves in feisty it's stability, an upload to edgy-backports can be considered. Until this happens you'll
have to rely on an unofficial repo like mine.

Thanks, Allee!

This file:

http://www.mpe.mpg.de/~ach/kubuntu/dapper/digikam_0.9.0%7Ebeta3-3%7Each0dapper1_i386.deb

throws a mysterious error when I try to install it with Package Installer:

"Failed to completely install all dependencies (broken cache)"

I try running sudo apt-get install -f but it just removes the
half-installed beta and resets me. The error comes back when I try to
reinstall.

Cory, you need to supply more infos.
If dpkg list any pkg (+ version) involved
supply it to.

Are you using edgy? Then libexiv2-10 from my repo
is not needed. You have to remove showfoto pkgs
and install digikam and digikamimageplugins from my
repo.

Works for me an another edgy user on IRC.
But please note it's an unofficial repo . Don't blame
(k)ubuntu about it.

It doesn't, but I'm game. What should I do to get you the information
you need?

Yes.

Then libexiv2-10 from my repo

I think we're going in circles.

When I tried to install digikam from your repo, it said "Failed to
completely install all dependencies (broken cache)"

I tried running sudo apt-get install -f but it just removed the
half-installed beta and reset me. The error comes back when I try to
reinstall.

You suggested that I install libexiv2-0.10, but when I tried to do that,
it said, "Error: A later version is already installed."

Well, yes, but that's the whole point of the bug report in the first
place: installing this beta manually is hard. The version in the
official Ubuntu repo is out-of-date and contains a critical,
show-stopper bug (renaming a photo after importing it makes it vanish)
that is fixed in the beta. Which means that potential digiKam users
should have the option of installing the fixed (but very hard to
manually install) beta, which is why it's a bug in Ubuntu that an
official supported repo isn't carrying it.

I close the bug now , 'cause
o feisty contains the latest digiakm release: 1:0.9.0-0ubuntu1.
o for dapper/edgy exists my unofficial repo.

Official backports are not easy as a clean solution means backporting

digikam digikamimageplugins kipi-plugins exiv2 libkipi kphotoalbum gwenview and showimg
