alternate ISO: installation freezes when starting partman

Continuing saga ;-)
after giving up hope on saving my home filesystem (see bug 723482), I went ahead and started an install-
To my surprise the install freezes at about the time it should start asking abut partitioning the disc.
a 'ps' shows
udpkg --configure --force-configure partman-base
/bin/sh /var/lib/
/bin/sh /bin/partman
parted_server
/bin/sh /lib/partman/
/bin/sh /lib/partman/
/bin/sh /lib/partman/
