Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

The sidebar in mode places has the ability to hold shortcuts which can be added using drag&drop. When hovering a folder icon or anything else over that area in the sidebar, a line indicating where the dropped item will be at appears.
If I move the icon away from the sidebar without releasing it,
the line does not disappear again and will stay there until closing nautilus. It only appears to do that if no other vertical element has been crossed, like when an item is dropped into the shortcut folder.

Oh, this only happens if the item is a file, not a folder.

Thank your for your bug. Minor upstream bug, to forward it that's not already known to bugzilla

What version of ubuntu do you use? Could you make a screenshot of the bug? Does it happens every time? That works fine on my feisty desktop

I am still on edgy, so i can't test if it changed. But yes, it happens everytime, so if you don't see the bug on feisty it's probably gone.
I'll be installing feisty next week or so. Afterwards, i'll report again.

Ok, it seems the bug is still there in feisty. On the image attached you see what it looks like after hovering an icon over the sidebar.
Though this bug is not that important, i agree, i think it should be fixed for cosmetic reasons (probably gtk bug?)

Does it happen every time? with the Ubuntu theme? with a new user? Does it depend of the number of bookmark you are using?

Stefan Bethge (kjyv) wrote :

Yes, I tried a new user, left everything at the default and tried it with no bookmarks, one and two. Still exactly the same.
Can't you reproduce it? I'll try it with the live cd, to be completely sure, that is has nothing to do with my setup.

Yes, it even happens with the live cd. Though i can't create bookmarks using it, the line still stays there.

then it might be a videodriver bug, which one do you use?

Stefan Bethge (kjyv) wrote :

'nvidia' that is, but to me it doesn't look so much like a video driver bug. Especially not since it doesn't happen if i drag a folder.
This even makes it probable that it is not in gtk but in nautilus itself. Please try it some more times if the bug really does not occur on your machine. I think it might not be trivial to reproduce it if you don't know when it happens.

You could have described that you were trying to dnd something which is not a folder, the bookmark are used on directories usually, That happens when using a non-directory icon

I've opened a bug upstream about it on http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=432529

Quote me: '... this only happens if the item is a file, not a folder.'
But it's good that it was not my hallocinations or something :)

It was not to the bug description nor title, we get hundred of bugs a week and I tend to read comments quickly, anyway the title make it clear now and the bug has been sent upstream

Confirmed that this is still an issue in Jaunty. Dnd hover over local disks in the sidebar has a similar issue - this one is reproducible with both files and folders.

Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. Unfortunately a paper cut should be a small usability issue that affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. I'm afraid this bug can't be addressed as part of this project.
A paper cut is a minor usability annoyance that an average user would encounter on his/her first day of using a new installation of Ubuntu 9.10.
