Bug Description

I have Ubuntu 10.10 on a separate drive as Win7, and I boot into Win7 just fine and audio is functioning properly on using the same CA0106 Soundblaster audio card. After a recent update I seem to have lost all audio playback. No application is capable of generating audio output, and this includes system sounds. I'm not muted, my speaker & audio hardware is all enabled & turned on. Please assist!

Output from Step # 4 from Sound Troubleshooting Procedure in Ubuntu Community Documentation online. Looks like some things were downloaded, unpackaged, and installed... ? Maybe this will help something - not sure. Also, the documentation says to state how I'm expecting to receive audio output: I want output through my analog 5.1 surround system moving trough my soundblaster audio card.

I've have the same problem since a kernel update in 10.10 (don't know which one sadly).
The soundcard is recognized without errors but any try to play sound fails (e.g. in the "test speakers" window in the sound preferences).

The problem is still there after upgrading to 11.04 beta and even with the 11.04 beta live cd.

This (quite severe) bug is over a month old and not even assigned to anybody?

I have the same issue with ubuntu 11.04. The funny thing is that the sound has been working for a while and then, after an upgrade, it suddenly stop working.

Any hope to have it working again ?

Found a workaround:

Install GNOME Alsa Mixer

sudo apt-get install gnome-alsamixer

Now open GNOME ALSA Mixer from Applications -> Sound & Video -> GNOME ALSA Mixer

Choose the tab: “CA0106…”

Turn on “Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack”
=> Deselect IEC958

That’s it now your sound should work as normal

Testing:

Thanks a million hn-bakkar, your small tweak has brought back my sound. Just by disabling IEC958 in GNOME ALSA Mixer, I got my sound back. I 'm really happy for getting back the sound. Thanks again for sharing the solution
