Bug Description

I followed test case xpr-001 here: http://testcases.qa.ubuntu.com/Hardware/X/ProprietaryDrivers#Installation

Steps 1-8 went fine, but step 9 failed.

Can you please attach the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf if there's one and the output the of command dmesg.
Could you please try to remove the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf (or renamce it) and try to boot again.

The attached xorg.conf was what Ubuntu created when enabling the proprietary nvidia drivers. Before that, there was no xorg.conf

Attached also the output from dmesg command.
If I remove xorg.conf, the boot process completes and gdm is loaded. I am then able to log in and get a desktop without Unity. If I try to go the the nvidia config, it says that the nvidia driver is not active.

I force-installed nvidia 96 driver on my fresh ubuntu natty installation. It refuses to boot afterwards.

Happened to me, too. Unless you need the performance, I suggest the nouveau driver for now?
