Hey, there is a plugin at the moment but I dont know if its working at the moment. Since thunderbird is the default email client in 11.10 im sure it will be in there by default for the next release.

Thanks for the suggestion,
Shane

We already ship an extension with Thunderbird to allow it to access existing addressbooks in EDS, which gives it access to the U1 addressbook.

What we need in addition to this is:

1) Split evolution-couchdb in to 2 packages - 1 for the EDS backend (which we want for thunderbird), and 1 for the Evolution plugin (which we don't want for thunderbird, as it pulls in the whole of evolution)
2) Implement an additional addon for Thunderbird to automatically create the U1 addressbook (similar to what the evolution-couchdb plugin already does). I've already written this, but I just need to package it

I'll keep the thunderbird task open for now, just so we have a task tracking the packaging of the additional addon that we need

The EDS Contacts Integration add-on that comes bundled with Thunderbird in Oneiric will allow you to access the contacts that are stored in the EDS backend.

Since the Ubuntu One contacts are stored in EDS, this should allow you to use Thunderbird to read/write to your Ubuntu One contacts. However, I believe desktop-couch is a little bit broken in Oneiric. Once that fix lands, I believe the Ubuntu One contacts will become available.

That was always the plan, anyhow. ;)

Note, I'm currently quite reluctant to upload the new addon, as the current desktopcouch breakage is the cause of bug 825280

This bug was fixed in the package evolution-couchdb - 0.5.91-0ubuntu6

---------------
evolution-couchdb (0.5.91-0ubuntu6) oneiric; urgency=low

  * Fix LP: #743096 - split the e-d-s backend from the Evolution plugin, so
that Thunderbird can access the U1 addressbook without pulling in the
whole of evolution. Adds a new "evolution-couchdb-backend" package
    - update debian/control to add new package, which breaks/replaces the
      old evolution-couchdb
    - add debian/evolution-couchdb.install
    - add debian/evolution-couchdb-backend.install
    - remove binary-post-install hook from debian/rules to drop the *.la and
*.a files from the binary. The debhelper files do this now
    - bump compat to 7, so that dh_install looks in the right place without
us needing to specify the path to the build directory

I'm not sure that this bug is fixed. I still get repeated errors within thunderbird, despite being uptodate.

My specific error is: There was a problem opening the address book "Ubuntu One" - the message returned was: Cannot open book: Could not create DesktopcouchSession object

Tarek, there seems to be an issue with the latest update of evolution-data-server, which is causing this problem.
