Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

All videos on http://www.moviefone.com/movie/ are extremely choppy. They barely play, and when they do there are several large squares of video that flash as black squares. Here's an example:
http://www.moviefone.com/movie/the-adjustment-bureau/50762/main
I attempted to catch a screenshot of it, but it displays fine in the screencapture and the black squares aren't visible.

Attached are the actual screenshot, and a 'simulated' pic showing the size and location of the black boxes
This is on a MacBook 6,2 running the 64-bit version of Natty Narwhal Beta 1

This happens on many, many flash videos. The only exceptions I am aware of are youtube and bbc vids.

A few more examples:

Also Gawker:

I noticed that this only happens in regular "preview" mode. If I hit the Full-Screen then all "blockyness" goes away.

I'm also seeing this in firefox on Kubuntu with intel graphics.

The same site and flash works perfectly in rekonq.

Installing http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10_square.html solves the problem for me

sudo cp libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/
sudo cp libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/firefox-4.0/plugins/
sudo cp libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/firefox-addons/plugins/

Glad it works for you, but I've had very, very poor performance with the 64-bit version of Flash on all previous versions of Linux, so I'll deal with the blocky-ness for now. Is this version even maintained?

I wouldn't recommend the 64-bit version. There have been 5 critical vulnerabilities in Flash announced since that was released.

This bug persists with Adobe Flash 10.2.159.1 into the Ubuntu Natty 11.04 release.

Flash video in Firefox is chunky, but it works perfectly in Google Chrome.

As Sergio (#6) said: Installing from http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10_square.html and copying to
 /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/ and
 /usr/lib/firefox-addons/plugins/ (firefox-4.0/plugins/ didn't work for me)
has fixed it.

I'm using 64-bit Natty, and my new (experimental) Flash version is 10,3,162,29. At this time the latest 'stable' version is 10.2.159.1. It's slightly ironic that they codenamed it "Square", right?

Hi,

Flash Player 10.3.181.14ubuntu0.11.04.1 just appeared and updated yesterday in natty...

Still the same problem with all my Ubuntu 11.04 (x64) installation.. Black square blinking with firefox. Was already the same problem with maverick..

I downloaded http://download.macromedia.com/pub/labs/flashplayer10/flashplayer10_2_p3_64bit_linux_111710.tar.gz and put libflashplayer.so in ~/.mozilla/plugins/ and the black squares are gone.

Purging all old Flash packages and installing flashplugin64-installer from the PPA:

https://launchpad.net/~sevenmachines/+archive/flash

Solves the problem for me.

Changed in firefox (Ubuntu):
status: New → Confirmed

Mike (bild85) wrote :

Installing that PPA will get you Flashplayer version 10.3.162.28, which has a release date of November 30th, 2010. There has been at least one critical vulnerability patched since that date.

As Derik points out, Flash works fine in Google Chrome.

I confirm : Firefox 5.0 from Ubuntu and from Mozilla still have this issue. Firefox 7.0 nightly don't have this issue.
