Bug Description

I tried running the Laptop Suspend/Resume tests (http://testcases.qa.ubuntu.com/System/SuspendResume) with no success and various errors.
* After manually suspending and waking the system (test case snr-001), the system always appears to be operating normally except that the CPU fan is blowing hard. "top" reports that the CPU is essentially idle.
* /usr/share/checkbox/scripts/suspend_test never suspends the system during test 1, and always reports "SUSPEND FAILED, did not go to sleep".
* Sometimes after suspend_test's test 5, the system starts to wake up, but after restoring the display it freezes and requires a hard reboot.
* Sometimes suspend_test's test 6 starts, but the system does not wake up voluntarily after 20 minutes. (I've waited 45 minutes...)
* Apport twice detected system problems, but AFAICT neither bug report made it to Launchpad.

The suspend/resume tests also fail with the released Natty, installed from ubuntu-11.04-desktop-amd64.iso and fully updated.
I made four runs:
- I ran the the manual suspend test, snr-001, twice, and it still turns the CPU fan to high.
- suspend_test's test 1 never succeeded, and always reports "SUSPEND FAILED, did not go to sleep".
- tests 2 to 5 succeed.
- Both times that I ran snr-001, suspend_test's test 6 failed. The laptop started to suspend but froze, after the screen turned black but before the screen backlighting turned off. The laptop had to be power-cycled.
- Both times when I did not run snr-001, test 6 succeed but test 7 failed when it tried to suspend for the first time; again, the laptop froze after the screen turned black.

Tis time there were no crashes, and /var/crash is empty.

Glen Ditchfield, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please provide the information following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume ? As well, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . However, note you can only test Suspend, not Hibernate, when using a LiveCD. If the issue remains, run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal) as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <BUGNUMBER>

Additionally, if you could try to reproduce this with the upstream mainline kernel that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.
