You just have an internal mic, no external mic jack, right?

Seems like the problem is that the internal mic is connected to adc node 0x11 whereas adc node 0x08 is the one actually being used. I believe the patch attached will solve the problem.

Yes, that's exactly as you said, I only have the internal mic, no external mic jack.
I'll apply the patch this evening.
Thanks.

I could not try the patch this evening because ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/ is currently unreachable.
I'm looking forward to try it tomorrow!

Thank you very much for fixing it so quickly!
Let me know if there's something else I can do.

If you feel like contributing to Ubuntu, there are plenty of things you can do, see http://www.ubuntu.com/community

@Lemuel: take a look here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1719770&page=2 .
Which kernel are you using?
Currently I am using 2.6.38-8 with natty, and since I updated to it the mic is working fine.

I'm also using Natty, with the latest update - 2.6.38-8.

My mic isn't working at all. I also have the Vaio S series.

should I report this as another bug?

here's my audio hardware info:

$ lspci | grep Audio

$ cat /proc/asound/version

Hello again.

@Vincenzo, I just patched up my system by following your instructions and MY MIC WORKED!! wooohoo!!

Thanks @Vincenzo and @David Henningsson for helping

but just one question. I thought this patch is already included in the latest Natty version. How come I still had to use manually fix it?

It is not yet released in Natty, when it will, this bug should be noticed. As for upgrading to newer ALSA versions, I generally recommend https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/UpgradingAlsa - although the daily builds are not yet up for Natty, so there is no really good option there yet.

Accepted linux into natty-proposed, the package will build now and be available in a few hours. Please test and give feedback here. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Thank you in advance!

Hi,

I enabled natty-proposed, updated my system and rebooted. It looks like the mic is still working properly.

But did the update really overwrote my previous patch or should I have uninstalled the AlsaUpgrade first before doing the update to test if the update really worked?

The only solution to make microphone work is to install linux-backports-modules-alsa-generic...

Just go to:

Menu / System / Administration / Synaptic Package Manager

And search and mark for installation:

linux-backports-modules-alsa-generic

tip: if you have multiple versions click on the first and read the description which should inform what name to install...

If after the reboot and mic mute is off, still does not work, just go to terminal and type:

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

and add or change the following:

options snd-hda-intel model=auto enable=yes

Then Ctrl+X, type Y to write and exit, reboot and mic will work.

Bye and have lots of fun with Ubuntu (the best).
