Bug Description

Binary package hint: overlay-scrollbar

I think it's not -
When opening the window no pager is visible until cursor enters the window
Then it shows, stays visible while scrolling with mouse scroll wheel or touchpad scroll area
As soon as you stop scrolling it disappears, resume scrolling and it will not reappear

To make it show again the cursor needs to be moved in any direction - process is repeated every time scrolling is stopped

Now it the thumb is used the pager stays visible all the time, so the only purpose to the fade out is when cursor leaves window is seems little to gain for above loss
Hope this makes sense...

To clarify from above
"Now if the thumb is used the pager stays visible all the time"
- the pager never fades when using the thumb until after the thumb fades, you can start, stop, restart the thumb with the pager staying visible the whole time

Hmm. I see it also in synaptic - so a couple of screens *not sure I described properly
screen 1 - opened synaptic - entered cursor, bars become visible

screen2 - started scrolling with touchpad scroll area, cursor in same position as above, bars disappear after about 1 sec of scrolling

To return bars must pause scroll, move cursor slightly, then they return. After about 1 sec of scrolling they disappear again

On a mouse with scrollwheel same thing except if while scrolling you move the cursor position slightly the bars can be keep visible

Seen on 2 installs, one 2wks. updated, one 04/08 updated

Andrea, can you back out the fading change completely? I don’t think it should be there at all. There should be no concept of inactive scrollbars, they are all created equal and they don’t have »state«, like windows.

Evolution is broken too with this change due to the different panels.

In Evolution when I hover over the text of an email, the scrollbar stays faint, practically invisible.

While I won't change the descrip. I think this can be characterized pretty simply -
New behavior is to 'fade on scroll' unless one is using the thumb

If that's the intent, while i don't agree, then nothing is 'broken' per se.

I'm not the one who takes decisions... I am implementing the design of the specifications I have to follow. I will report your concerns, don't worry

Doug... I can't reproduce the bug.
The pager becomes inactive when the mouse receives a "leave" signal from the main window, that could be a x11 issue or something with the window manager. I need to see a little bit more

While I try on at least one install to keep to the current default state, I did change some a couple of the default enabled compiz plugins.
So after seeing that it works as intended by logging in to no effects went ahead and set the the unity profile back to exactly as delivered -
it now works as it should.

Will try to discover the plugin or setting that is causing, if for nothing else as a warning
I didn't do anything too radical and see on 2 installs so shouldn't be hard to work out
Sorry for any wasted time..

It seems that if desktop based viewport switching is enabled (typically next - button5, prev - button 4) that this fade on scroll will start happening

Did happen upon a few other scenarios when it also occurs - (with the above disabled, working as intended

If I do a search in a window, ex.'s of search in a text file or search in synaptic, then this also occurs, confirming focus on the window doesn't change
Clicking off the window, then back on, (focus off, focus on), restores intended w/ the pager
There is also a rare occurrence if a text file is the first thing opened this may occur, moving the window fixes, doesn't much matter
