Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.17-10-generic

Hi folks,

My english isn't very good, so I hope that you can understand me.
During the boot process, using the ubuntu 6.10 with any 2.6.17-10 Kernel for x86 arch (386, gerenic, server, etc), the system crashes with kernel panic.

I tested a new kernel compiled from vanilla sources, using the .config of the Ubuntu kernel 2.6.17-10, and the things goes fine. I think the problem is related to VIA VT6410 IDE RAID controller because, in the past, the machine had similar problems caused by it. The problem was solved in Ubuntu Dapper because the support to the device was embedded in the code of the module via82cxxx.

I verified the module and the code wasn't removed. So I suppose that one of the patches applied by Ubuntu over the vanilla sources causes the problem. Follow the lsmod and lspci outputs:

Helton,

is this lsmod output being generated with the vanilla kernel using the .config from ubuntu?

Did you take a look at ubuntu's patches regarding this specific device? (By the way, could you please attach a lspci -n here too?)

Hi Alexandre,

The output was generated using a vanilla kernel, but I think that the .config is not from ubuntu...I will verify with Helton.

Hi Alexandre,

Yes, the lsmod output was generated with the vanilla kernel 2.6.17-10 using the .config of Ubuntu Dapper, Kernel 2.6.15-27.

Perhaps I am missed on this, but didn't see any patch regarding this specific device.

As Grazieno said, the 'lspci -n' output is:

Hi, you're missing the most important portion of the dump. Can you try shift-pageup to get the whole text? The part in particular we need is the register dump (eax, ebx, etc.)

Cheers,

Grazieno,

you could try to change vga mode to a higher resolution during boot to achieve a higher resolution. VGA=791 would probably be enough. Ah, try removing the date, as it got quite big :-)

Hi Surak,

I tried all the options in the live-cd (F4 option) and there is no boot. The computer freezes (numlock inactive).

So I try pass VGA options in 'Boot Option' (Surak's suggestion) . I tried VGA= 769 | 771 | 773 | 775 | 788 | 791 | 796, but I don't have sucess in both case.

Any suggestion?

Alexandre,

I tested the kernel proposed in the beta and the error persist. Monday, by morning, I will try to take a picture of the screen showing the registers values. Also, I will build last kernel locally, as Ben Collins asked, and will put here the results.

Thank you by the attention.

Kyle and Alexandre,

Here are the informations that I promised:
dmesg with kernel 2.6.19-Vanilla (the last kernel that we run with success in the machine);
lspci -vvn (again, with kernel 2.6.19-vanilla);
Screenshot of the error in kernel 2.6.17-10-386 (Ubuntu Version);
Screenshot of the error in kernel 2.6.20-14.23-generic (The proposal for the final version for Feisty)

If you need anything else, please, let me know.

hello all!

I have the same problem. My MB is a MSI 915g Combo with Via VT6410 Controller.
This problem occurred with ubuntu 6.10 and 7.04, and Debian Etch 4.0

The "kernel panic" message is the same related above. It is solved?

Thanks to all!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'.
