Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

When loading Unity on 11.04 on hardware with an nForce 430 mobo and onboard GeForce 6150, the screen is either partially corrupted and performance is very slow, or no background is loaded (plain white) and all applications seem to open as simply white squares.

As to whether this is a bug in Compiz or a bug in the nVidia proprietary drivers (nVidia X Settings reports that I'm using version 270.41.03), I can't really tell as Nouveau refuses to load on my system at all, resulting in a blank screen and my monitor going into power-saving mode and I can't even bring up a virtual terminal.

Could people having the issue out of the bug submitter also give their lspci infos for their card?

FYI, we are currently blacklisting the card so that users don't experience a poor unity performance in natty. However, there is the UNITY_FORCE_START environment variable that you can set to 1 to by-pass this check.

This bug was fixed in the package nux - 0.9.46-0ubuntu3

---------------
nux (0.9.46-0ubuntu3) natty; urgency=low

  * Cherry-pick blacklisting additional driver + UNITY_FORCE_START env variable
    to bypass unity/compiz testing:
    - Partial screen corruption and poor performance on GeForce 6150
      (LP: #764379)
    - [nvidia, 7300, 7400] display freeze when using unity desktop

I can confirm this bug with my fresh install of ubuntu 11.04 amd64 with all latest updates.

Is there a solution how I can use unity with the Geforce 6150?

I have installed and activated the nvidia driver 270.41.06 by jockey-gtk.

Whenever I start Ubuntu / Ubuntu Classic and force unity with /etc/environment everything of the screen is white excepting the panels. So it is unusable.

Regards,
Arthur

Hey harryn,

You filed this bug report against natty, but I see it's still open and
doesn't appear to have much activity recently. So, now that oneiric
is released and stable, this may be a good point for you to upgrade
and re-test if this issue is still present there.

If it's solved in the new release and you think it's worth backporting
the fix, please indicate that. Or if having the fix in the new release
is good enough, feel free to close out the bug (or let us know and we'll
close it.)

If it's not solved, leave the bug report open. I can't promise we'll
get to it (we get way more bugs filed than we can usually get to), but
your testing and feedback can help out if and when we do.

Hi Bryce,

Unfortunately I no longer have the hardware I reported this bug on. You might want to close it for now.
