Bug Description

Binary package hint: blender

right now blender in the repository is at version 2.49.2~dfsg-2ubuntu4 even though outside of the repository its been at 2.57 for some time now and is considered stable

a big reason why it needs to be updated is because the UI is a lot more user friendly than the 2.4x series

going ahead and marking as confirmed because A. someone marked that it effects them B. the last actual update in blenders repository for blender was 66 weeks ago C. the 2.5x has a lot of bug fixes and better UI

also for people who don't want to wait the best PPA i found for getting blender 2.5x is https://launchpad.net/~cheleb/+archive/blender-svn

  * Dropped changes:
    - ubuntu_binutils_link.patch: fixed upstream.
    - debian/rules: Clean *.o of source/blender/python/api2_2x/. Useless after
      switch to cmake.
  * blender-2.57-libav-0.7.patch: patch taken from gentoo to fix FTBFS with
    libav >= 0.7.

Also for someone trying to learn to use Blender, current tutorials are much harder to use given massive changes in the UI. So I see from Janitor's comment that is should be fixed... but it isn't coming up on the Ubuntu software update package. I know I can get it the longer more confusing way. Why doesn't it show up in the Ubuntu Software Center?

Hi Robert,

the update is quite old (May 2011), so if you are using Oneiric, you should already have it. If you are using an older version of Ubuntu, then you have to upgrade to Oneiric to have the latest Blender version or backport it on your own.
