Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

When I want to move a window to an other workspace I have to do the procedure twice.
For example:
Right mouse button -> Move to workspace -> workspace 2
This does nothing.
And when I'm doing the same thing again the window gets moved to workspace 2.
So I have to do this always twice to move a window to another workspace using the right mouse operation.

I was unable to replicate the issue, however with Unity occasionally some dialog boxes will not respond to mouse clicks or keyboard shortcuts and have to be killed so the issue could perhaps be related to that making it a bug with Unity (as the issue does not occur in the classic desktop for me).

Hi Stephan,

Thank you for filling this bug report!

From what you've said, I understand you're using ubuntu classic, and not Unity. Can you confirm that?

If you're using Unity, where do you right click on?

In Unity if you click into the workspace icon, the one that shows 4 desktop by default, if you click once, unity highlights the desktop and when you click again, unity zoom into that certain desktop.

Sometimes, unity freezes, and needs 2 clicks or more to change into another desktop using the workspace icon.

Actually, on my machine:
-If I click once, it highlights the desktop
-It I click twice (but NOT double-click), it does nothing more than highlightning, which can give you the feeling it's not working.
-If I double-click --> it actually zooms into the desktop.
-If I right-click once, it zooms into the desktop.

If it behaves like this for you, I think it's not a bug... Otherwise, it just means I can't reproduce :-)

I changed it to incomplete for now. Don't hesitate to put it back to "new" if you think it's a bug.

Guillem, what you describe is not what Stephan initially reported. Did my comment (#5) make you understand how it works? Or do you still believe it's a bu? (If so, don't hesitate to open a new report).

Stephan, I was unable to reproduce that. That's why I put it back to incomplete, I want another reporter to put it to "confirmed".

Nicholas, regarding comments #2, I would suggest you fill another bug report (if no one exists for this issue). It might be related to this one, but it is not so obvious. Thank you very much !

Hey I was on vacation so I cant answer this post.

First I use Unity.

I will try to explain the problem again.

I have a non English version of Ubuntu, so maybe it is not workspace(could be Desktop)

The focus is on a window, then I make a right klick on the top of the window(the panel where close, max aso. is)
I choose "move to other workspace" and then choose "workspace 2".

If I do this, nothing happens, but when I do it one time more the window gets moved to workspace 2.

So I think it is a bug, because the first time I do the action nothing happens. The window dont get moved to an other workspace.

Hope it will be clearer for you.

Hi Stephan,

I was able to reproduce this issue, so I am setting this bug to confirmed. I think a lot of the comments are related to a bug that is not this one. Thank you for providing the extra information needed to work on this bug.

Seems I spoke too soon, I'm now unable to reproduce it. Regardless, after some discussion - this should be a compiz issue rather than nautilus, unless you can say that it always happens with nautilus and never with any other application.

I also have this problem.

All programs need 'move to another workspace' clicked twice before they will move.

(Move to workspace right/left works fine)

Hello everyone,

It's been a long time this bug has been opened, let's try to make it triaged!

I am still unable to reproduce the bug and I thought it might be related to some compiz plugins.
Johan, Brendan and Stephan, can you tell me which plugins are you using in compiz?

Thank you very much

I experience this problem too, although not every time - probably around 50% of the time that I try moving windows between workspaces it works on first attempt, 50% works on second attempt. It's never failed to work on the second attempt. Like Johan I am using Ubuntu 11.04 Classic.

Autra, you asked for a list of compiz plugins. For me it is as following:

General: Composite - Gnome Compatibility - OpenGL
Accessibility: Enhanced Zoom Desktop
Desktop: Expo - Desktop Wall - Viewport Switcher
Effects: Animations - Fading Windows - Window Decoration
Image Loading: Png
Utility: Bailer - Compiz Library Toolbox - Detection - Mouse Position Polling - Regex Matching - Session Management - Workarounds
Window Management - Grid - Move Window - Place Windows - Resize Window - Scale - Snapping Windows - Static Application Switcher

If anyone knows how to create this list automatically, it might be worth sharing the tip!

I am also experiencing this bug (or a very similar one) with Ubuntu 11.04 (amd64) Classic using Metacity.

I don't know how to reproduce it, it seems to happen when I least want it to and it behaves normally when I try causing it again. It also happens with any window, such as Pidgin just before I came here.

I am experiencing a similar issue, but for me "moving to another workspace -> workspace 2" doesn't work at all even clicked twice.

I'm using 12.04 with unity. Additional to default plugins I use with it are "scale Addons" and "scale window filter".

Does not work once, but works after the first fail :)
I noticed this long ago, I have to learn how to file and document bugs properly..
