Bug Description

Test case type: Ubuntu Feisty X86, Desktop CD. Installation from the LiveCD.

Image ID: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/feisty/herd-2/feisty-desktop-i386.iso

Dowloaded and burned: feisty-desktop-i386.iso

Date of testing: 16.jan.2007

Md5sum confirmed: Yes, also verified disc contents from the boot screen.

Pass/Fail: Fail.
-----------------------------------------

The i386 herd 2 iso works well as a live cd, but I can't install from it. I launch the installer & successfully go through the first 4 steps, but it crashes & freezes my laptop on the transition to step 5.

I posted extra details on the forum: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=2021641&postcount=1

Could you try pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 and then Alt-F7 to switch away from X and back? If that lets you proceed, then it's a known bug that I've since fixed.

When it crashes, everything freezes - nothing responds, it's totally locked up.

If you know of any way for me to obtain extra info please let me know & I'll gladly try it again.

I would suggest looking at the changes between today's 20070127 and yesterday's builds. This bug was fixed for all this week's daily builds and reappeared just today.

As I have commented in Launchpad some days ago, the disk is partitioned correctly but feisty cannot format the partitions. The pc freezes at 100% cpu

I am testing feisty in vmware, but I expect the same behaviour in all x86 and amd64 desktop builds of today (kubuntu, xubuntu, dvd) etc. The alternate might be ok (but only when installing on new hard disk, the partitioner still can't handle existing partitions).

ahaslam,

Are you able to reproduce this bug in the latest release of Ubuntu, 8.04?

Thanks!

If it's a complete lock-up, then that's a kernel bug; reassigning over there, although I'm not sure how far we'll be able to get with it. (Bubba, your problem was something else, and I think we fixed it some time back.)

Is this reproducible with Ubuntu 8.04.1?
