Bug Description

During a new install from the 'alternate i386' install disk (the live CD install needs too much memory for my little laptop and never completes, so I dont know if this works) the acx firmware directories under /lib/firmware/2.6.17-10-generic' are not created or populated, so an installed acx100 type card will not start. (card was present during install)

Machine is Ergo Elite 2 laptop, PII 300Mhz 192 MB RAM with IDE CD and IDE Floptical drive. acx card is BInatone WL1000 cardbus card.

Messages are generated in /var/log/messages to indicate the firmware files are missing. (acx: firmware image 'acx/default/tiacx100' was not provided. Check your hotplug scripts).

Using 'lspci' and 'lshw' its possible to see that the hardware is present and detected ok.

On another machine with > 192 MB RAM, the live install CD installs the files correctly. Copying the files from this machine to the faulty machine corrects the problem, and I was able to start the network configurator and set up the card.

I can't find the buggers... I couldn't find a linux-restricted-modules-generic for 2.6.17.10

Dell latitude c600 with a dlink dwl-g630 pcmcia card...

The card worked after changing a symlink in 6.06 so I'm wondering what's going on.

Hi Dave,

The 18 month support period for Edgy Eft 6.10 has reached it's end of life. As a result, we are closing the linux-source-2.6.17 Edgy Eft kernel task. However, Hardy Heron 8.04 was recently released. It would be helpful if you could test the new release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download . You should be able to test your bug using the LiveCD. If the issue still exists, please add the Hardy kernel "linux" task to the bug report. This can be done by clicking on the "Also affects distribution" link in the Actions area on left hand side of the bug report. Select "Ubuntu" as the Distribution and type in "linux" for the Source Package Name. Thanks.
