Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers of the software by following the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. If you have done so, please tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a bugwatch that will inform us about its status. Thanks in advance.

See attached patch.

Description:

Move the gnome-pty-helper into the -common package and install
only a single copy of this set-gid binary in /usr/lib/libvte.

The downside of this approach is that the -common package becomes
architecture specific.

As a workaround you can you use dconf-editor to set proxy settings.

This bug also affects 12.04 (x86 + x64) version of Ubuntu. I can't find the authentication option as I did in Ubuntu 11.04, for example.
The dconf-editor workaround may work (modifying env var as well), but it's not satisfying as everybody can read the password.

I wish there was an easier option... and secure option!
as a lot of business and educational institutions use proxies.
Please fix this.

what would be really good is also a location feature of when and where to use proxy servers on the system and when not to. it was implemented in the older versions of ubuntu.

affects: gnome-control-center → network-manager-applet
