Bug Description

Hi,

/usr/share/applications/system-config-printer.desktop contains:
OnlyShowIn=Unity;

I only wanted to remind you that Unity is not the only desktop environments whose users would like to configure printers. And also, that Unity is not the only gtk based desktop environment in the Ubuntu archive (I know, this seems unlikely, but believe me, it's true, there's something called "universe", and there are several packages in there ;-).

I can't really understand what you tried to achieve with this OnlyShowIn (not show it in GNOME? KDE? -- in such cases, NotShowIn was more appropriate), but this looks rather wrong. Now it's probably impossible to add printers using Xubuntu...
Please fix it.

Thanks.

Thanks for reporting this bug and any supporting documentation. Since this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work, I'm going to mark it as confirmed and let them handle it from here.

I can confirm that Xubuntu no longer has any method available to easily add any printer. Please change the .desktop file as soon as possible to allow users to have their printers again. Since this recent change in Oneiric, all printers disappeared for Xubuntu users.

Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better!

The idea was to let GNOME use the GNOME3 control-center dialog, we don't want to use it under Unity because the GNOME one is still feature limited compared to system-config-printer, NotShowIn=GNOME should work though

I think that'd be NotShowIn=GNOME,KDE

It would be nice if the Printing Icon would be avaiable from the Settings Manager Window. Many users will look there for setting up their printers.

I don't know what the settings manager window is (or even whether you're
talking about Ubuntu, Kubuntu, or Xubuntu), but that would be a separate bug
report.

Settings Manager window is the actual control panel in Xubuntu

I am happy we can now add a printer to Xubuntu Oneiric. If it really is a concern where this is in the menu (it has been in System for many releases), please file a new bug for moving it in the Xubuntu menu system.

@ Charlie Kravetz, Mackenzie Morgan:

I wasn't thinking about a movement of the icon from the System Menu to the "Xfce Control Panel", but about having both because a user would expect to find a Printer Manager in the Control Panel, and it will look more complete as well. I've made a quick mockup you can see below.
