Bug Description

Summary: wifi is not working anymore on my Acer Aspire 5930G. It's currently working with Ubuntu 10.10. I just tested the Oneiric 11.10 beta 1 live image and it stopped working. When you boot the system and you click on the wifi icon in the indicator panel you can see the wifi networks available. I choose mine and I'm prompted for a password but it try connecting forever without any success. No problem doing this with Ubuntu 10.10.

Note: I did not test this laptop with Ubuntu 11.04 but I can do it if you think it can be useful to fix this bug.

My laptop has an Intel Wifi 5100 network card. Here you can find more informations:

How is your router configured? Are you using a passphrase? In your WifiSyslog.txt you attached it has this:

Sep 5 16:47:28 ubuntu kernel: [ 699.166203] wlan1: deauthenticated from 00:18:4d:69:0a:02 (Reason: 1)
Sep 5 16:47:29 ubuntu wpa_supplicant[3460]: WPA: 4-Way Handshake failed - pre-shared key may be incorrect
Sep 5 16:47:29 ubuntu wpa_supplicant[3460]: CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTED bssid=00:18:4d:69:0a:02 reason=1

So it looks like your using the wrong passphrase

It looks like from what I'm seeing you typed the passphrase wrong. I'd try removing the AP from NetworkManager thru the Edit Settings menu, then connect back up and retype in the passphrase.

Andrea Grandi (andreagrandi) wrote :

Maybe it is how the Network Manager behave: it thinks I've typed the wrong password, infact it asks me it again after a couple of minutes, but I've tried many times. This Oneiric live image works perfectly fine on my Asus 1005PE and on my Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3t but it doesn't on Acer 5930G. I can try again if you want but I don't think I typed a wrong password. I'll keep you updated.

Andrea Grandi (andreagrandi) wrote :

I just tried another couple of times, always showing the password while I was typing, like the other times and it worked. I don't know what to think. Maybe I could be wrong last time or maybe it could be a sort of race condition. Do you want me to mark this bug as invalid and maybe I reopen it if this should happen again?

Andrea Grandi (andreagrandi) wrote :

p.s: why I think I didn't type the wrong password: on this USB live image I have persistency enabled. I tested two other netbooks and they were able to connect and the password was saved. So if the password was already saved on the USB key, why it resulted wrong on the third PC?

I can confirm this bug on my Thinkpad SL500 and Intel Wifi 5100. it works perfectly in 11.4 but not in the final stable 11.10.
It displays wireless connections but refuses to connect to any of them. i've tried both secured and non secured networks with the same results. i'd be happy to provide more on this.

Thanks

This card worked fine on 10.10. I had to disable n to get it to work on 11.04.

I upgraded today and during the upgrade process and ever since, the card doesn't work at all.

@Simon

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the release candidate kernel versus the daily build. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Brad Figg (brad-figg) wrote : Test with newer development kernel (3.0.0-12.20)

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report on this issue.

However, given the number of bugs that the Kernel Team receives during any development cycle it is impossible for us to review them all. Therefore, we occasionally resort to using automated bots to request further testing. This is such a request.

We have noted that there is a newer version of the development kernel than the one you last tested when this issue was found. Please test again with the newer kernel and indicate in the bug if this issue still exists or not.

If the bug still exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Confirmed. If the bug no longer exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Fix Released.

Thank you for your help, we really do appreciate it.

Just curious if you only see this issue when using wireless N protocol?

This may be a duplicate of bug 836250

Just posted this as Bug #879414. Below is the description. Added it here because this may be the same bug?

Edubuntu 11.10 64bit. Intel Corporation WIFI Link 5100 on a 64bit Sony VAIO

Wireless works flawlessly with LiveCD. Post install, however, wireless doesn't work.

During install, I checked off the option to install the wireless network.

Symptoms (after installed reboot):

1.) No wireless networks are shown as being available.
2.) The wireless network which had been installed does not work.
3.) If one disables wireless networking, it cannot be re-enabled without restarting.

Removed installation and installed Xubuntu 11.10. Wireless works flawlessly after installation. The problems 'seems' to be Unity/Gnome related?

I got the exact same problem and can confirm the bug. My Laptop is a Samsung R560 and my Wifi worked better from the Live DVD but after install it disconnects randomly. I can also confirm that it doesnt seem to be a network manager Bug, because it also acurs when i use "wicd" or something else.

And i definately did not put in the wrong WPA2 Passphrase. Networkmanager thinks the Passphrase is wrong because the bug is deeper in some kernel module i guess...

here some of my dmesg info from pulling the cable going wifi till disconnect and inserting cable again.

I allready deactivated ipv6 cause my router doesnt support it anyway as far as i know.

according to:

http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/wlan-klappt-aber-kein-n-standard/#post-2732590

there are currently stability problems with some wifi standards. so i turned the n standard off by putting the line:

options iwlagn 11n_disable=1

in my /etc/modprobe.d/options.conf and reloaded network manager and my kernel module.

still testing but it seems stable. If it works for others i hope a fix will be released soon.

In my options.conf there were entrys for other modules, so i guess the iwlagn was just forgot when delivering oneiric.
