Bug Description

When the updates that require system reboot are installed there used to be a notification in the shutdown menu that a restart is required and the shutdown icon will be red. This is now missing.

I have noticed this. It was only the icon that failed to change, the menuitem in the menu was observed to be correct.

The power cog is still not turning red to remind of a necessary restart. I've noticed though that it turns red, when the user logs out and logs in again. It also turns red after my laptop has been in standby (suspend to RAM) and wakes up. Looks like the menu is not refreshed otherwise.

Additional info from duplicate bug 870484:

“This morning a new kernel was installed, and I thought it strange that I wasn't prompted to restart the computer. However, the on/off button turned red the instant the software center started.”

This bug is still present in Ubuntu 12.04.2. Here the icon turns red only after the software-manager is started, and then still only after a while.
